LAS VEGAS (AP) Rory McIlroy ended Sunday on a big weekend in Las Vegas by jumping past Rickie Fowler and holding Collin Morikawa to win the CJ Cup summit on the 20th PGA Tour.
McIlroy took control with a 35-foot eagle throw just after the green par-5 14 and then played flawlessly for 6-under-66s and one win.
McIlroy is the 39th player to have won at least 20 times on the PGA Tour, and it is his Fifth Consecutive PGA Tour season with at least one win.
Fowler, who started the final round with two shots in the lead in an attempt to finish nearly three years without a win, disappeared with a pair of three punches and shot 71 to third in the draw. The threat came from The Summit Club member Morikawa, who shot 29 ahead to get into the mix and closed Kotka with 62.
This forced McIlroy to play flawlessly after his big eagle on the 14th.
It’s a big carrot, McIlroy said with 20 wins. I didn’t know it would be this week.
He went nine shots off the lead over the weekend, scored a lot of ground at 62 on Saturday and then retired using scoring holes.
It was similar to his first win on the PGA Tour in 2010 at Quail Hollow. After nine shots, McIlroy missed to go the weekend in that tournament and ended in rounds 66-62 to win.
Morikawa looked from the balcony overlooking the 18th putting green to see if he could get any extra holes, though it asked a lot of McIlroy to drop the shot into the par-5 closing hole. McIlroy pulled out of the way, played a little green and hit a wedged back pin to secure a two-pipe pair and a second prize.
Part of him originated in the disappointing Ryder Cup when he won the point only on Sunday singles when it was too late and he was full of emotion when he talked about it.
He wanted to get back to his roots as a player, and it worked well against a strong field that made McIlroy rise from the top 15 in the world.
Being me is enough, he said. Being me can allow me to do things like this.
Keith Mitchell, who had a five-shot lead over the weekend until the third round was 73, closed the 67 and tied third with Fowler.
Fowler was ready to end the 32-month drought by starting the final round with two shots and looking like he was going to stop it. He made an 8-foot birdie-Put for number 4, which became two shots when McIlroy had a sloppy three-pipe.
This started to turn into a par-5 in the sixth. In the middle of the fairway, Fowler pulled the fairway metal into the desert, took a penalty drop, and then a three-tube at 35 feet for a double bogey. McIlroy made a birdie and just like they were tied, along with the others in the farther round.
Talor Gooch hooked Kotka’s par-5 in 18th place at 62. Morikawa went out in 29 and was in the lead. Robert Streb was also tied for leadership at the time by 21-under par.
McIlroy and Fowler in the final group were exactly 22 when they went back when Fowler made another mistake.
McIlroy looked at the potential nonsense, coming from the fairway bunker, which was far from the putting green on Day 10, and had a hard flop throw over the second bunker to a tight pin. Fowler had 18 feet for the birdie. McIlroy hit a couple of cents a pair, while Fowler fired his bird accident about five feet from the hole and missed three Putin horses.
Fowler never reached.
Morikawa’s momentum stopped. Sure, he shut down a bird that forced McIlroy to play flawlessly over the last four holes, but the British Open champion failed to take advantage of birdie opportunities with an achievable par-4 12 and par-5 14 iron fairway.
Whenever you shoot 62, you’re always happy, Morikawa said. But I thought I left a few out there, especially with some pipes. But overall, I’m very pleased with how this last 18 went, especially on the course I’ve played a lot. I felt very comfortable and it was a great way to start the season.
