CHAPEL HILL, NC -The best weekend of my career from a junior Hailey Borja, the ninth-ranked women’s golf team at the University of Michigan submitted two over 868 54-hole totals and finished seventh in the 19-team top-ranked Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational at UNC’s Finley Golf Course.

Wolverines started the second live fall event by playing with some of the country’s best programs, with 12 of the 19 teams among the top 50 in the country. Friday (October 15) opening round, senior Ashley Lau‘s 70 (-2), Borjan 71 (-1) and a couple of par-72 72s from a sophomore Monet Chun and Anika Dy helped Maize and Blue get one of the eight subgroup totals by 285 (-3), and the day ended exactly fourth.

Borja sped up Wolverines on Saturday (October 16) in the second round, recording five birds for the second day in a row and charting their career low binding 68 (-4). By adding two even par-72s from Chun and Dy, UM repeated his opening 285 (-3) to stay fourth on his own, for a total of 570 (-6) after the second day.

Challenging final round lineup and strong winds on Sunday (October 17) scoring rose across the field, but Borja made three straight sub-rounds 71 ​​(-1), while Lau blocked a tie for 72 to help UM close with 296 and three-day 868 -third of the top 10 falling.

“We had two really stable days of golf as a team,” said UM head coach Jan Dowling. “When you play in these great areas, you can’t afford a day off and expect to be at the top at the end. However, the weekend belonged to Borja, who finished third in a row in her top 15 single places and ranked second in the top five this fall. In these three par-par rounds, including the second round of his best-handed 68 (-4) draw, he sent his best 210 (-6) tie to the third of 96 field fields.

The total was five shots lower than his previous best of 215, which he played at the season opener at the Wolverine Invitational. His 210 tied him to the third-lowest total of 54 holes in program history and his 13 birdies over the weekend leveled the field for the third most.

“I came over for the weekend with great confidence in my game and made sure I had fun on the track this weekend,” Borja said. “I also made sure I stayed patient on the course, made clear decisions, and selected small items.”

“Hailey had a really great week,” Dowling said. “He’s always a very good ball striker and the soft greens let him be aggressive. Boy, is he big. The team is excited about him, and this kind of game is contagious.”

Lau followed Borja and tied for 29th place with 217 (+1). Leading UM with an opening of 70 (-2), he slid in the second round with 75 but recovered in the final round with 72 (E). Leading the field with 44 pars, Chun tied for 35th place with 218 (+2). Dy (73-73-81) and younger Mikaela Schulz (73-73-79) rounded out the UM’s top five finalists as they both equalized in 64th place to 225th.

The Wolverines will close the fall season back to North Carolina as they head to Wilmington from Friday to Sunday (October 29-31) for the UNC-Wilmington Landfall tradition. The three-day 54-hole event will be played at the Country Club of Landfall.
