“Freak” is a term that is moved too much in the sports world, but sometimes it is the first phrase that haunts the skull when a rugged athletic achievement occurs.
What about turning the head and sighing worth the whole game?
SI All-American continues to greet these dominant high school footballers on a weekly, aptly named “Freak of the Week” and going to a major Friday night performance. This week’s candidates arrived from afar, and several impressive performances are considered in honor.
For the second week in a row, the two-way performers took the honor.
Colton Bower, a senior quarterback from Poulsbo (Wash.) North Kitsap, dazzled on the field on Friday night by winning 56-21 Bremerton (Wash.) High School. He ended the night 359 yards past, combining six touches and rushing 99 yards at 11 carrying stations. In defense, he added in favor of the abduction.
“As a player, he’s the kind of kid you get once in your career,” North Kitsap coach Jeff Weible said. Sports illustrated. “He ‘s a phenomenal athlete who plays football, baseball and basketball. He’ s just been a beast on the football field.
“Outside the field, he’s an even better kid. A humble, quiet, kind of example. He’s been a captain for us for three years.”
A talented athlete with honors in every sport, a state-owned basketball ring in addition to his name, ranked as one of the best baseball catchers in the region and committed to playing in Washington state, he has played football all over the field. Bower has started in a tight end, a linebacker, a defensive backrest and of course a quarterback in college. He even kicked the field goal that won the game as a sophomore.
“Just to watch him attack, if something isn’t open, he rushes,” Weible said. “He has great speed, great hard to pursue. You just stand in amazement watching him do things. He’s a pretty special kid.”
North Kitsap has played six games in 2021 and sits unbeaten in a dominant position, averaging 52.3 points per game and giving up less than 12 Bowers. As a player, he plays 70% of his passes and has scored 27 goals against just one abduction. Seven other points have come to the ground as an attacker and in defense he has taken three assists.
Bower’s overall athleticism and football IQ make his coach think he could “play it safe at Division I level”. Weible said he told Jimmy Lake, head coach at the University of Washington, that the senior reminded him of former Husky star and current Los Angeles Ram defender Taylor Rapp, who had just been selected as an NFC defensive player when he grabbed two substitutions on Sunday against the New York Giants.
“It’s his nose for football,” Weible says of Bower’s safety. “He has 26 career breaks, and that means only five games last year because of the COVID situation. We believe he will close the state record. He can read the defender’s eyes and study film.
“We all have lunch together every day and he’s always the first guy to watch lunch at lunch, so he’s well prepared for Friday night.”
Bower, listed at 6 ‘, 195-pounds has spent most of the offseasons focused on his first love, baseball. His coach thinks if part of it were to go to football, he would have FBS grant offers on the table. Programs like Washington and the Air Force have shown interest so far, and while a parent would like more football opportunities, the current plan is to play baseball in Washington state, where he made a verbal commitment in 2020.
