A great evening for Australian football in Parramatta. It was a friendly game at the pace and intensity of the tournament.
Australia needed performance after disappointment when there were controversies on the field, and that’s exactly what they did. It was far from flawless, but it showed method and purpose and showed the way to 2023.
The pace was at the heart of it all. The speed of the ball movement, the energy of Carpenter on the right, the speed of Kerri’s movement fall between the lines and pull off the shoulder of his box. Modern football requires everything to happen in the blink of an eye.
The problem is that such a strategy involves the risk of the ball disappearing during the transition phase or if pushing forward is skipped. This reveals a back quarter and midfielder who was repeatedly under pressure tonight. Something to work on for the next couple of years.
Thank you Brazil for giving 100%. Leticia from playing after being beaten into the tube after 15 minutes. To Tamires for the wonderful nutmeg. And to Martha when she drove to the match 20 minutes before it was the Cup final.
Join us again on Tuesday – hopefully – for more of the same.
