Kraken makes history in Seattle with the city’s first NHL hockey
On Saturday, history was made in Seattle as the first-ever home NHL game was played on Kraken’s ice at the Climate Pledge Arena, hosting the Vancouver Canucks.
SEAT – Seattle Kraken lost 4–2 to the Vancouver Canucks, but that wasn’t enough to hurt the history of the Climate Pledge Arena on Saturday night.
The first NHL home game was played in Seattle when Kraken hit the ice in the Climate Pledge match and took over the Canucks.
Throughout the city, signs of excitement were everywhere. Fans with a Kraken gear filled the streets, companies held special events, and the Kraken flag flew high over the space needle.
“This is the first NHL game in Seattle, so I’m pretty excited about it,” Scott Pringle said.
Pringle stood out from hundreds of Kraken fans at Dick’s Drive-In, near the Climate Pledge Arena, thanks to a massive, Kraken-shaped knitted hat.
Pringle left the party for Dick’s early to enter the arena, but many other people hung out, listened to music, and enjoyed the big party of the historic day.
A few blocks from Coltiva, fans prepared for the game in a milder setting with pizza and drinks. However, the excitement of the big day was still the same.
“This is my dream,” Tamae Satsu said.
Hockey is a huge part of Satsu’s life. He played for the Japanese national team for ten seasons, including a member of the 1998 Olympic team.
“Professional hockey, I would never have imagined this to happen. Today is overwhelming, I’m so excited,” he said.
Some fans were waiting for much of their lives this day.
“I’ve been waiting for this day,” Dylan Gale said.
When Gale first heard the NHL was coming to Seattle, he was eight years old.
Now, after almost a lifetime, it’s finally here, and nothing stopped him from seeing Kraken play at home.
However, getting into the game was not easy. Gale had to play his own hockey game earlier in the day he says he won. Then his family had to fly from Kennewick to get to Seattle in time for the puck to drop.
Gale says everything was worth it.
“I’m really excited.”
Unfortunately, Kraken lost to the Vancouver Canucks 4 – 2. The Krakens are back on ice at the Climate Pledge Arena on Tuesday against the Montreal Canadiens.
