Australian spin-bowling giant Ashley Mallett has died at the age of 76 after a long battle against cancer. Mallett played 38 tests from his debut against England in 1968 and took 132 assists with an average of 29.84 and also ended his test career against England in 1980.
Mallett is just behind Nathan Lyon (399 points) and Hugh Trumble (141) on the list of Australia’s most successful Test-off spinners. His 8-59 against Pakistan in 1972 was the Australian’s eighth best bowling test turn.
Mallett exploded to fame on his second Australian overseas tour as Bill Lawry’s team secured a 3-1 victory over India. During that series, Mallett earned an average of 28 points on 19.10, including 10 wickets in the fifth and final test of the match.
Born in Sydney, Mallett began his career in Western Australia, but ahead of rotators Tony Lock and Tony Mann in pecking order, he switched to South Australia. The move proved to be a championship draw, and Mallett thrives on a first-class career that would eventually cover 183 matches.
During his long career, he earned an ironic nickname for Rowdy because of his quiet nature.
At the end of his playing career, Mallett gathered a legion of fans with his writing. He was active in this sense until recently, and he was involved in writing Neil Harvey’s biography The Last Invincible, which was published in June.
Mallett died Friday in Adelaide.
