Guilford Field Hockey, volleyball progression at SCCs

Hockey

The Guilford field hockey team won the last two games of the regular season and then won the semi-finals of the SCC Tournament last week. With these wins, the Grizzlies improved to readings from a 16-1 year level.

Guilford earned a 5-0 home win against Amity in its regular season final on October 27th. The next day, Guilford faced East Lyme on the road and made a 7-0 shutout.

Then, on Oct. 30, No. 1 Guilford opened the game in the SCC tournament by hosting No. 8 Mercy in the quarterfinals. The Grizzlies beat the Tigers 10-0 to reach the semi-finals.

Senior Maddie Epke scored eight goals and made six assists between Guilford’s three-week game.

Guilford will host the 4th Branford in the SCC semi-finals on November 1 (after press time). If the Grizzlies won, they faced the 2nd Cheshire and 3rd Sacred Heart Academy winner in the finals on November 3 (after press time).

Guilford will also be taking part in the Class M State Tournament, which begins Monday, Nov. 8 and continues through the championship at Wethersfield High School on Saturday, Nov. 20.

Girls volleyball

The Guilford girls volleyball team ended their regular season with a loud voice and then opened the SCC tournament with a win last week. Guilford now has a record in the 11-8 campaign.

On Oct. 25, Guilford hosted Shelton and won 3-2 (25-19, 22-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-7) in his regular season regular season. Four days later, the No. 8 seed Grizzlies faced the No. 9 Sheehan SCC Tournament in the first round at home. The Grizzlies defeated the Titans 3-1 (25-16, 25-16, 24-26, 25-12) to advance to the semifinals.

Guilford played No. 1 in Cheshire in the SCC quarterfinals on November 2 (after press time). With the win, the Grizzlies will face the 4th Branford and 5th Hand winner in the semifinals on Thursday, November 4th. The SCC final is at West Haven High School on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m.

After the SCC, Guilford will participate in an L-Class state tournament. The tournament starts on Monday, November 8 and ends with a title match at East Haven High School on Saturday, November 20.

Boys soccer

The Guilford boys football team finished their regular season and then competed in the first round of the SCC Tournament during the past week of action. The Grizzlies defeated Hamden in the regular season final and then lost to Fairfield Prep in the SCC, moving to 11-4-2 of the year.

On October 25, Guilford played a road game against Hamden and won 4-1. Young Tyler Yerkes scored the first goal of the game without a pass to Grizzlies. Junior Sami AbuGhazaleh scored the next three goals for Guilford as he withdrew from the win.

Then on Oct. 30, Seed No. 5 Guilford played 4th in the Fairfield Prep SCC semi-finals and lost to the Jesuits in overtime 2-1. AbuGhazaleh scored the Grizzlies ’only goal in the loss.

Guilford will compete in the Class L State Tournament, which begins on Saturday, November 6 and ends in the championship match at Dillon Stadium in Hartford, either on Saturday, November 20 or Sunday, November 21.

Girls soccer

The Guilford girls ’soccer team won their last two regular season matches before losing in the SCC Tournament quarterfinals last week. The Grizzlies have a record 8-6-3 as they prepare to play in the states.

On October 25, the Grizzlies hosted Lauralton Hall and won the race 7-0. Three days later, the Grizzlies finished their regular season by beating Wilbur Cross 6-0.

On October 30, Seed No. 7 Guilford traveled to Woodbridge to meet No. 2 in the semi-finals of the Amity SCC Tournament. Guilford dropped a 2-1 decision against Spartans in the game.

Next up for the Grizzlies is the Class L State Tournament, which starts on Saturday, November 6 and culminates in the finals on either Saturday, November 20 or Sunday, November 21 at Dillon Stadium in Hartford.

Girls swimming and diving

The Guilford girls ’swimming and diving team faced Lyman Hall against Sheehan Hall High School on October 25th. Guilford and Lyman Hall ended the match in a 93-93 draw when the Grizzlies moved 10-1-1. season.

Guilford will have an SCC championship this week, after which he will compete in the Class M State Championships.
