Canada will land in the Czech Republic on Monday to compete in the Billie Jean King Cup final. Formerly called the Fed Cup, it was renamed in 2020 in honor of Billie Jean King.
In the international competition, 12 countries will face the desired prize. The teams are divided into four blocks and four winners advance to the semi-finals.
Tennis Canada replaced the former host country in the A-block of Hungary and will face the French-Russian tennis federation. France is the reigning champion of the tournament. Canada advanced to the BJK Cup as the highest-ranking winner of the April playoffs. This win was originally a qualifier for the 2022 tournament.
“We are so happy and proud that the BNP Paribas 2021 Finals selected our team to play for the Billie Jean King Cup,” said Team Canada captain Heidi El Tabakh in August when the announcement was made. “When we won against Serbia in April, we didn’t expect to have a chance to represent our country in the finals so soon, and we are very grateful for this turn of events. While the competition is certainly tough, our team has the potential to compete with anyone, and we will do our best to win. ”
El Tabakh is unable to attend the event and Sylvain Bruneau has been appointed interim captain of the tournament.
When and where are the Billie Jean King Cup finals?
The tournament will take place from 1 to 6 November 2021 at the O2 Arena in Prague. The tournament, originally scheduled for April 2020, was postponed twice. The O2 Arena has hosted the finals five times, with the Czech Republic winning domestically in 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2018. Budapest was to be the venue, but was rejected in May due to COVID-10 concerns.

One Canadian advantage could be that the tournament, if held, would have been on clay. Now the tournament is played on hard fields in the Czech Republic.

Where is Bianca Andreescu, Leylah Fernandez?
Andreescu announced in early October that he would not compete this year.
“After careful consideration and consultation with my team, I have made the decision not to play in the Billie Jean Cup final in November,” he said. “I’m trying to finish these last tournaments of the year in a strong way, and then focus on getting a very good off-season training block to be fully prepared for the 2022 season.
Although nothing was said at the time, it should be noted that Bruneau is the interim captain. He and Andreescu parted ways as coach in June after four years of collaboration.
Fernandez withdrew from the team on October 14th. The 19-year-old boy has been busy for a couple of weeks since he performed in the US Open final in September and advanced to the Indian Wells final.
“It has always been an honor to represent my country,” Fernandez said. “Canada has given me and my family so many opportunities, and in recent weeks, Canadian support has meant the whole world to me. After consideration, I have made the decision not to play in the BJK Cup final. I wish my team all the best for this November! ”
