Sold Out Audiences Supported by Female Goalkeeper Vulnerable Sexist Songs Target – CBS Pittsburgh

CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. (KDKA) – The sold-out crowd expressed support for the local high school female goalkeeper after a video came out in which Armstrong high school students shouted vulgar and sexist remarks at her during the game.

The songs against the Mars goalkeeper took place in a match against Armstrong River Hawks. The case received national attention and ended with a ban on students in grades 7-12 at the Belmont Complex playing River Hawk University or high school games.

All 850 tickets were sold on Monday night. About half an hour before the disc was dropped, there were only 25 left.

Monday night’s game between Mars Fightin ’Planets and South Fayette was moved from the Baierl Ice Complex in Warrendale to the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex to accommodate more fans. Players even from Johnstown and State College attended to show their support for the female goalkeeper. There were also women’s hockey players from Pitt, Chatham and Cal U in the match.

“She’s incredibly strong,” said Tessa Moore, a hockey player in Wheeling. “If it were me, I would have been a wreck. He’s incredibly strong.”

“I’m shocked that this was allowed to happen and no one stood up,” said hockey mother Amanda Moore. “So we’re here tonight to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”

For some attendees, it was their first high school hockey game.

“It’s about solidarity,” Brandy Kennedy of McDonald said. “It’s not right on so many levels. She’s there to do what I think is the hardest position on the ice, and they’re attacking her just because she’s a woman.

“It was so sad for me to look at it like what they told him. It drove me crazy,” said Evelyn Jorinscay, a hockey player from Cambria.

Monday night’s message was sportiness, respect and equality.

“Girl hockey players can be as good as other hockey players,” said Vivienne Volek of Mt. From Lebanon. “I think he’s doing a phenomenal job.”

“Hockey is a big community and we are a big family,” Tom Scherr of Mt. From Lebanon said. “We just want to show him that this is the whole family informing you that what happened wasn’t right.”

On Saturday night, the Pittsburgh Penguins will host the Mars team in their home game at PPG Paints Arena.
