University Basketball Opening Night – Duke-Kentucky Men’s, South Carolina-NC State Women’s Fight

Welcome to the 2021 college basketball season.

November brings the return of basketball to university campuses across the country, and much is expected on Tuesday. On the men’s side, No. 9 Duke and No. 10 Kentucky start the season against each other in the AP top 10, with No. 1 Gonzaga starting their way back to the fourth final.

On the women’s side, number one South Carolina will face the top five with NC State for the year’s run, with 16 other ranked teams taking the floor.

The opening night in college rims brings back the home field advantage. When fans return to the stands, the fields will have more noise and storm this season.

Card party

The South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team had a big test early in the year when it faced NC State. While the game was competitive all the time, Gamecocks was too much for Wolfpack. Aliyah Boston did the work at both ends of the floor (see just her stat line). The junior striker scored eight points, six rebounds and two assists, but his efforts at the defensive end earned him recognition as a high-profile player.

Scott blocked five shots at the opening of the season and claimed to be a threat to the finish line. WNBA star Layshia Clarendon spotted the Boston block party and shouted at her on Twitter.

High-flying rims

Quinnipiac guard Matt Balanc threw down one of the best-proclaimed dunks of the youth college basketball season with a monstrous slam in his team’s game against Maryland.

The junior guard then stared at Fatts Russell, a guard at the University of Maryland. Russell had little chance against Balancia – he’s 5 feet 11 inches compared to the Qunnipiac guard standing 6 feet, 4 inches. Although the dunk was ferocious, it hasn’t led to the Bobcats as they follow Terrapins in the second half.

In the match between Indiana and Eastern Michigan, Jordan Geronimo got off to a good start. He took the ball from Hoosier teammate Trayce Jackson-Davis and threw a powerful alley op. After watching the latest, Geronimo skis to slam home this dunk.

Summer’s punches

The Ohio State Buckeyes won the season opening match against Akron Zips in a dramatic way. With two seconds less than seconds left, Zed Key took the ball on the field and scored a goal at the end of time against Akron. A bucket of his late game helped Ohio State escape with a win and avoid the ups and downs of the early season.

Respect for legends

Duke Basketball honored Mike Krzyzewski before his first game last season as the men’s team head coach. Coach K was given a plaque full of his accomplishments since he was named Blue Devils head coach in 1980.

Mike Krzyzewski gets standing applause when he is honored before coaching Duke for the 11th and final time in the Champions Classic.

Duke has won five titles under Coach K, whose overall record as head coach is 1170-361. In June, Krzyzewski – the winning coach in Division I men’s basketball history – announced that the 2021-22 season will be his last.

From the city center

The women’s UMBC basketball team is advancing against Gettysburg and increased their lead before Half Time with an amazing shot. Jatarrikah Settle of the Retrievers grabbed the ball in less than two seconds and lifted the half of the field. The bucket went in and UMBC led the break 43-14.

First game, fresh fired:

Nothing says you’re ready to jump like a perfect kick. Duke women’s basketball may not yet be among the top 25 in the AP, but Vanessa de Jesus, Celeste Taylor and Miela Goodchild should earn a top spot in the shoes they performed before their season-opening match against Winthrop Eagles.
