CLEVELAND, Ohio – After Wednesday’s shooting round, Cleveland Cavaliers newcomer Evan Mobley worked for nearly 30 minutes on the follow-up.
Left elbow. Left block. Right elbow. The right block. Fadeaways. Jumping hooks. Drop steps. Pivots. Left shoulder. Right shoulder.
An hour later, that extra work showed up.
Despite a poor start that made Mobley play just 26 minutes, the second-lowest of his season, Clevelands wunderkind finally found his rhythm and ended up with 19 points 7/15 off the field and 1/3 of 3. point range. Mobley has now reached a double-digit number in five consecutive games. He was considered number one only once this magnificent new age – a terrible night in Phoenix when Deandre Ayton physically defeated a young man. It’s not long to go to Mobleys the Cavaliers ’leading scorer.
Much has been said about his defensive influence. He is ranked 11th in the blocks. Opponents shoot only 43.4% of the field against him. He remains the league leader in competitive shots – both 2s and 3s. He can switch to small ones and stay in front while protecting the rim. Mobley and center Jarrett Allen have formed an impressive front line. Cavs has a defensive ability of 99.6 in 251 minutes. In perspective, the Golden State Warriors lead the league with a score of 99.2.
But the rapid development of Mobleys in the attack will help unleash Cavs ’creativity.
Their series and performance are better. They do not slip into repetitive isolations, but are only ranked 25th in the ISO frequency. They rank fourth in feed percentage and eighth in feeds made. They attended the evening, producing the second most points per game. Are in the top half of the series in terms of effective paint percentages. It is much more modern.
During Wednesday’s gut-wrenching loss to the Washington Wizards at 97-94, a game in which Cleveland did not reach the fourth quarter lead for the first time in the entire season, Mobley was used in many different ways. The Cavs even ran reverse Mobley-Darius Garland and Mobley-Ricky Rubio pick-and-roll roles, with guards acting as screens and Mobley as a ball handler. One led Dylan Windler to three points in the first half. The second came in the fourth quarter as Cleveland tried to curb Washington’s rise. There’s an obvious recognition of how much good is typically generated when Mobley has the ball.
I think he’s choosing his place and understanding what the defenders are doing and how he’s getting to his next place, Caves coach JB Bickerstaff said of Mobley. You watch him learn on the fly, and you not only learn, but also apply. I think what’s unique is that he can apply what he’s learned in one or two games. Often boys take years to figure it out.
Over the weekend, Mobley identified New York as the latest opponent to try to put pressure on him. Julius Randle. Mitchell Robinson. Nerlens Noel. The plan was to take Mobley’s airspace by testing his handle, playfulness and temperance. Mobley broke the code and finished in the best 26 points of his career.
Three days later, he was at the gym working against this tactic.
I feel more comfortable in every game, Mobley said. Me and the coaches have worked a lot on the post as well as the 3-point shots.
The events after the beginning of the season were extraordinary. Also not very productive.
Mobleys have been effective in placing screens and scrolling. He is clearly most comfortable getting the ball in motion or standing against the defenders. He helps connect the crime from the perimeter or elbow. Thanks to his handle, he can attack the big one in a unique way.
But on Wednesday he flashed even more diversity. He exploited his limitless attack potential.
With his first basket, Mobley started with a straight dribble over the 3-point mark against Montrezl Harrell. He then turned the ball over to Windler so they could play a two-man game. This episode ended with a mid-range Mobley floater that showed his soft touch. After the next ball, Mobley retreated from Washington’s Deni Avdija and earned a trip to the free throw line. Garland-Mobley’s pick-and-roll would have led to another bucket, but the ball seemed to slip out of Mobleys ’hands as he went to layup after a handy pocket pass.
A few possessions later, Mobley and Garland forged a DHO (dribble handoff) before Mobley stepped calmly into a 17-foot pullup jumper. Then there was another Garland-Mobley connection that led to painting. His last basket from the explosive 11-point second quarter was a catch-and-shoot triangle showing extended range – the question came from USC.
Mobley took a total of seven shots. Two floats. One bet. 3-point. Multiple fades. And bullying, And-1-layup through Kyle Kuzman – scheduled for a game timeout in the early fourth quarter. Mobley, a novice who has recently become the number one newcomer of the year, shows something different every night.
Diversity. Creativity. Extension.
If Mobley is already so good 12 games during his NBA career, what will it look like in a month, in the middle, at the end of the year, in a few years?
The more you are close to him, the more you see, Bickerstaff said. You’re doing your homework and you’re studying film before, but there are things he did when they played the pickup when he first came here, and now he’s doing otherwise. All of these things, when you’re close to him, you see what he can do. This forces us to resolutely get him there and do our best every single day to help him become the kind of player we know he is.
Mobleys ’role in the crime is expected to grow in the absence of Collin Sexton. Sexton suffered a rupture of the articular stone in his left knee during Sunday’s victory in New York. There is no official schedule for his return, but the Cavs are preparing for a long sideline.
Prior to his injury, Sexton led the team in occupancy – albeit the lowest percentage after his newcomer growth year.
In the first game of this stretch without him, many roles were different. Garland and Rubio were always the most obvious candidates to move forward. It survived. Rubio had the highest occupancy rate for the period (35%). Not surprisingly, the previous peak was against the Knicks on Sunday when he started the second half at the Sextons spot. The use of wreaths also rose from 22.6 in the first 10 games to 25.6. The third-year point guard also stepped into Sextons ’vacated closer role by taking the final shots as the game tightened in the fourth quarter.
Windler, Lamar Stevens and Isaac Okoro – the latter returning from seven matches in the sideline due to a back injury – received an additional minute, another expected by-product following Sexton’s absence.
But Mobley was the biggest beneficiary. Prior to Wednesday night, his highest occupancy rate was below 20. During the first few weeks, he finished sixth in the team in that category despite leading in minutes of play. He broke the 20 percent usage limit just four times in 12 games. Against Washington, that figure rose to 38 percent, showing the confidence Bickerstaff has talked to Mobley recently.
Was this larger role a deviation from one game or a sign of things to come – a natural evolution of a budding star that is constantly replenishing its arsenal?
