Indian Diya Chitale reached the women’s singles draw at the WTT Contender Novo Mesto 2021 in Slovenia, defeating Sreeja Akula. She is the only Indian player in the women’s singles main series, while Sharath Kamal, G Sathiyan and Harmeet had made it directly to the men’s singles.
Rising Indian table tennis player Diya Chitale won the Sreeja Akula women’s singles draw in the WTT Contender Novo Mesto 2021 tournament in Slovenia on Wednesday, according to an Olympics.com report. In the final qualifying match in the youth rankings, Chitale, ranked 15th in the world, defeated his compatriot Akula 3-2 (11-8, 10-12, 11-7, 7-11, 12-10).
This means that Chitale is the only Indian women in the singles draw. Just before the start, star singer Manika Batra had been excluded from the tournament. On the other hand, Swastika Ghosh lost to Chinese Liu Weishan 1-3, which ended his hopes of getting into the main series.
The 18-year-old won the second game and the situation was then 1-1. But later in the match, the Indian ran out of power, while Weishan moved on to the next round quite comfortably.
As for the men’s singles, six Indians were in the fight to get to the main round, but all of them, like Manav Thakkar and Commonwealth Games winner Anthony Amalraj, fell. Sharath Kamal, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Harmeet Desai got straight to the main draw and will start their campaigns on Thursday.
