The second division of the Southend & District Table Tennis League had big winners in the form of Wakering, who defeated duty 9-0, and Stanford B, who defeated Canvey B 8-1 and rose to the top of the table.
In Stanford’s win, the player in the match was Saad Abdullah, but he was almost raised by teammate John Handscombe, who also won all three matches but returned twice to a 2-0 win in five innings.
The four matches went to five in the night, but the only one Stanford lost was Jo Hills ’12/10 win in the final set, giving Canvey a consolation point.
If the result wasn’t great for Customs in a 9-0 loss to Wakering, the match was important to them in another way because it had three players from the same family Richard, Breda and Joe Kidd.
Wakering proved far too strong, but Richard Kidd almost took a consolation point from debutant Pete Sarfas, but returned from two rounds to stab Kidd in the final 9/9 in the final set. Keeping the family theme, father and son Paul and Zac England formed the revival team.
Hadleigh Forum D shares second place with Wakering when they beat Stanford D 6-3, but with only two players.
Tony Mace and Jean Catley lost just one set against Stanford’s team of Mark Downey and young Randy and Jake Santiago.
Canvey C lost 5-4 just last week to Stanford B, but managed to get a little revenge against Stanford C, winning 5-4 this time.
Archie Blackburn took the match’s player prize, backed by Kevin Walsingham, who got the brunt, while Stanford’s scores were shared by Mark Farley, two and one for Steve King and Peter Moxham.
Runnymede got his first win of the season thanks in large part to Dmitry Kisil, who won all of his games in a tight match, four games in five sets.
The winning team consisted of Tina Hutchinson brace and Steve Wisbey in one.
Hockley E and Hockley F fought for bragging rights and this time Team F won 6-3.
Graham Gregory, Alwine Jarvis and Keith Denyer shared the scores, but none of them were able to beat Ron Rogerson, who won the match’s player award.
Brothers James and Samuele Treslove formed the Hockley E team.
There are some great games in the Premier League this week where all three went straight into the lead and ended 5-4.
In the first of these games, Hullbridge B pushed the title favorites to the end of Thorpe Bay when Harry Keys won a good win over John Poysden and Liam Squirrell impressed with his wins against Poysden, Joe Kennedy and Paul Sayer.
Their efforts were not enough to win, as Sayer (2), Kennedy (2) and Poysden (1) still took the catch.
Rayleigh Mill recorded their first win and in fact their first points of the season when they won the Hadleigh Forum 5-4.
All players won at least one win during the evening, and Duncan Taylor’s three wins only tilt the balance in Millers ’favor.
It was a good evening job and Bruce Kettle’s maximum, leading Rawreth B to a 5-4 win over Irons A.
Kettle recorded wins against Dave Bowles, Stuart Gibbs and Richard Brown, with Gibbs and Brown answering with two wins and four points for Irons.
Tim Cramphorn and Justin Jeffrey both beat Bowles to take Rawreth past the winner.
