SAUK CENTER – The Marshall Girls hockey team beat Prairie Center 8-0 to open the season on Tuesday.
Marshall jumped into the lead early and did not look back, scoring four goals in the first set. Leah Schaefer started scoring for Kayta Waltz before Schaefer found the goal again, this time with the help of Tessa Gannott. Regan Loft scored 3-0 on Kalyn DeVlieger’s pass before Eliza Holmgren passed the goalkeeper Kendal Beernaertin and scored 4-0 after one.
Marshall quickly increased their lead in the second period as Schaefer finished the hat trick from Olivia Lupkes and Shelby Ormberg before Gannott found the finish line at the end of the period from Loft’s feed and lifted their lead to 6-. 0 after two.
Aubree Metheny and Schaefer added goals in the third set as Abbey Foley and Lily Verkinderen picked up the passes, respectively.
Marshall defeated Prairie Center 55-2 in the match. Belle Deutz earned Marshall a net win, halting both shots he faced.
Marshall (1-0) will face Mankato East on the road on Saturday at 2 p.m.
