Corbin Burnes defeated NL Cy Young past Zack Wheeler and Max Scherzer

Phillies ace Zack Wheeler made a strong performance, but was only short of the National League’s Cy Young vote.

Milwaukee Brewers right-handed Corbin Burnes is the winner.

Burnes won Wheeler and Max Scherzer of the Los Angeles Dodgers in a close vote by members of the Baseball Writers Association of America. The results were announced on Wednesday night.

Burnes got 12 first place votes, 14 seconds and 3 thirds to finish with 151 points.

Wheeler also got 12 first place votes, 9 seconds and 4 thirds with 141 points.

Scherzer got 6 first place, 5 seconds and 13 thirds and finished with 113 points.

Wheeler is Phillies ’third Cy Young second with Roy Halladay in 2011 and Jim Bunning in 1967.

Wheeler’s case was built around his workload. He led the main series with 213⅓ innings, finishing first in the NL with 247 overtime and fifth in ERA (2.78) and WHIP (1.01). He started six shifts in 27 of his 32 starts.

Scherzer went 15-4 with a 2.46 ERA 30 start (179⅓ innings) for the Nationals and Dodgers. He led the main series with a microscopic 0.864 WHIP and went 7-0 at 1.98 ERA in the Dodgers 11 starts. The Dodgers won all 11 games. The performance was not good enough to earn the 37-year-old right-hander the fourth Cy Young Award.

Burnes, who turned 27 on October 27, won even though he made just 28 starts and held 167 innings. Brewers occasionally used a six-man circuit, and Burnes also missed a few starts during the COVID protocol.

Burnes collected 28 eye-catching numbers in his start. He led the main series with a 2.43 ERA and was second after Scherzer with 0.94 WHIP. He recorded 243 overs and walked only 34. His 12.6 strokes per nine innings and 6.88 strokes and walks were the biggest games.

Burnes opened the season with 58 overs before walking his first bet on the way to a 35.6 percent overseason, the best of the big games.

Burnes is Brewers ’third Cy Young winner. Rollie Fingers won in 1981 and Pete Vuckovich in 1982.
