Azeem Rafiq’s storm of racism: What anti-Semitic messages say, Yorkshire cricket

Rafiq, who tweeted about these remarks on Thursday, said: “I’m back to review my account and that’s me – I have no excuses.

“I am ashamed of this exchange and I have now removed it so as not to cause further offense,” the 30-year-old Pakistani-born cricketer added.

“I was 19 at the time and I hope and believe I am a different person today. I am incredibly angry with myself and I apologize to the Jewish community and all those who have rightly been offended by this. ”

The Assembly of British Jewish President Marie van der Zyl responded in a statement: “Azeem Rafiq has suffered terribly from the hands of cricket racists, so he is well aware of the damage this exchange is doing to the Jews who have supported him.

“His apology seems really heartfelt, and we have no reason to believe he’s not completely sincere.”

Muslim Rafiq was widely praised for telling a parliamentary committee on Tuesday a worrying account of the racism he suffered during two Yorkshire, after saying earlier that the beating had made him consider taking his own life.

The former off-spinner, whose case has led to new revelations in other district clubs, told the committee: “Do I think I lost my career to racism? Yes.”

He also mentioned several former teammates, including former English international players, including Gary Ballance, who was still in Yorkshire, had used racial slander against him.

The consequences of the scandal for Yorkshire, one of the oldest and most respected counties in English cricket, have been devastating as sponsors have moved in and the club has been barred from holding lucrative international matches.

But Rafiq warned that Yorkshire, whose chairman and CEO have both resigned, could not proceed until head coach Andrew Gale and cricket manager Martyn Moxon had left the club in Headingley.

Gale himself is currently on hold pending investigations into a historic anti-Semitic tweet, and former England striker Moxon has signed on for a stress-related illness.

Rafiq accused Gale of continuing racial violence and systematic bullying of Moxon, including Rafiq on the first day of his son’s death after birth.

The UK government warned the English cricket governing body on Thursday that it would face widespread criticism of how it had handled Rafiq’s revelations during a period of widespread criticism of the “core option” of self-regulation.

Tom Harrison, director general of the Cricket Board for England and Wales, who also testified on the same committee as Rafiq on Tuesday, insisted that his organization was “fit for purpose” as both the promoter and the regulator of the game.

But sports minister Nigel Huddleston warned that if the ECB “does not get together, we will have a core option in legislation to possibly have an independent regulator in place”.

Harrison faced a meeting of the ECB’s Executive Board on Thursday and will be re-examined at a larger “all-games” meeting of its 41 members – including 18 first-class counties and the MCC – in Oval on Friday to discuss the Rafiq scandal.

But if Harrison is ousted, it would leave a vacuum in leadership after ECB President Ian Watmore resigned last month over a controversial decision to cancel an English tour in Pakistan in October.
