AB de Villers announced that he would give up all forms of cricket earlier on Friday, ending his 17-year career, when he confirmed himself as one of South Africa’s biggest players.
De Villiers had stopped playing all international sports in May 2018, but discussed returning to the limited games side of the Twenty20 World Cup before deciding not to play in Proteas.
The 37-year-old was still involved in franchise cricket, most recently playing in the Indian Premier League in Royal Challengers Bangalore, who described his retirement as “the end of a batch era” after a decade with an Indian game series.
Following his announcement, a number of current and former cricketers took over their official Twitter account to pay tribute to the big player in South Africa.
If Buttler, one of England’s most aggressive bats on the current team, wrote, “What a player! I was one of many who turned on the TV just to watch you. Enjoy retirement, what a career. ”
Faf du Plessis, who has shared a South African locker room with AB de Villiers most of his time in international cricket, called him the “best player” he has ever played with.
This is how other current and former cricketers respected the South African.
