Chinese media releases pictures of tennis star Peng Shua participating in junior tournament in Beijing Tennis news

Chinese state media released a video and photos of tennis star Peng Shua on Sunday at a youth tournament in Beijing after he was still worried about his whereabouts after accusing a former top leader of the Communist Party of sexual abuse.

The video was published by Hu Xijin, editor-in-chief of the state-run Global Times, who said on Twitter that the video was filmed on Sunday.

Peng was shown standing next to the court and then waving and signing large commemorative tennis balls for children.

“Peng Shuai appeared at the opening ceremony of the teenage tennis final in Beijing on Sunday morning,” Hu tweeted.

“A video filmed by my colleague Cui Meng at the National Tennis Center, where Peng Shuai is playing big tennis balls at the opening ceremony of the Junior Tennis Challenger final. It’s a way to inspire more kids to play tennis as a hobby and also a career,” another state media reporter said on Twitter.

In the video, Peng smiles and poses in photos with young players.

Pengin is seen wearing a dark blue jacket and white pants, his hair in a ponytail and smiling and waving to the audience.

The video was released after Hu announced on Saturday that the former world number one would be “blocked in public” soon.

Earlier, the head of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) said a video released Saturday night in which Peng Shuai starred outdoors with his friends was “insufficient” evidence of her safety.

Chinese state media posted on Twitter two clips of Peng allegedly eating dinner with his coach and friends at a restaurant.

“While it’s positive to see him, it’s still unclear whether he’s free and whether he can make decisions and act on his own without coercion or outside harassment,” said WTA chief Steve Simon.

“This video alone is not enough. As I have said from the beginning, I remain concerned about Peng Shua’s health and safety and the allegation of sexual violence being censored and swept under the rug. I have made it clear what needs to happen and our relationship with China is at a crossroads, Simon said.

Peng has not been seen or heard in public since he accused former Deputy Prime Minister Zhang Gaol of sexual violence on November 2, the day after his 75th birthday.

His claim first appeared on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, but it was quickly removed.

On Saturday, Roger Federer expressed concern about Peng, the latest star player to have done so.

“He’s one of our tennis champions, the former number one in the world, and that’s clearly worrying,” Federer told Sky Italy.
