Avalanche can’t stop scoring, scoring seven more goals to defeat the Senators and continue their winning streak to five

The Colorado Avalanche would continue their red goal set when they struck Ottawa senators 7-5. This would drive Avalanche’s winning streak into five games and elevate their recent goals to a senseless 31 in their last five games.

Foreplay

It was at the Girls Hockey Night Ball Arena when Avalanche entered tonight’s competition in the four-match winning streak. Ottawa came to Colorado after a week-long dismissal from COVID and previously lost 4-0 to Calgary on November 14th.

Tonight was Nicholas Aube-Kubel’s home debut at Avalanch as well as Captain Gabriel Landeskog’s 700th NHL match.

The first season

It didn’t take long for Avalanche to roll in front of a home crowd, and big Valeri Nichushski did his best to generate revenue behind the Ottawa network. Some quick passes ended with the Russian winger being rewarded for his hard work with an easy tap and lifting Colorado ahead just 50 seconds after playing.

The Senators can be considered lucky as it kept the game 1-0 for as long as they did. The goalkeepers kept the competition tight, and both Filip Gustavsson and Darcy Kuemper made great struggles. Gustavsson would make the biggest stop; stone wall Jayson Megna after Avalanche’s fourth line broke through the Senator defense to get one against the Ottawa netminder.

Ottawa would soon take advantage of this great fight, keeping the game inside one, as the arrest penalty for Nazem Kadri would give the Senators a power game they would use to level the game.

Bednar usually throws the opponent on the ice after the opponent’s goal, hoping to gain momentum again. Tonight, it worked to the fullest when Landeskog found Cale Makar with a great pass and a young superstar defender buried the chance to take the lead again in less than 20 seconds after Ottawa leveled the game.

It looked like Colorado would head to the locker room in the lead, but a move and a big record ball for Artem Zubille would cost Avalanche the lead with only 45 seconds left in the episode.

Second episode

It was a strange mid-season when Avalanche played as if they had been in a power game all season. The Senators did not register a shot to the finish until 6:21 left. For about the first twelve minutes of the episode, the most entertaining pieces were the absolutely dominant power game and the blown skate. Avalanche recorded at least six shots in that power game, but couldn’t get past Gustavsson, who was huge for the first ten minutes of the entire episode.

The blow skate was an interesting series where Kuemper kicked the blade from his skate into the pole, the coach was unable to fix the problem quickly and Jonas Johansson made the first fight of the episode. Kuemper returned soon, but not until Avalanche returned to leadership.

Nazem Kadri is in tears. He earned his second primary pass of the evening to Devon Toews, who cut from a beautiful pass and turned the pass to the back of the net.

Avalanche did not hold this lead for long, and thanks to a second substitution, Ottawa leveled the game for the third time.

Samuel Girard earned himself a trip to the penalty area shortly before the end of the period, so Avalanche would have the penalty to kill at the start of the third set. It was the second season in which Colorado beat Ottawa by a significant margin but was unable to take full advantage, mainly due to the mistakes of his own head.

Third season

The Avalanche started the episode on the hind leg when Ottawa changed the power game from the second installment. Colorado was penalized for every mistake tonight by a sniper team of Senators.

Makar then took the game on his shoulders as he clearly didn’t like losing, and leveled the game in less than two minutes after Avalanche went back.

The wild game continued as Sanford finished his hat trick from the side of Kuemper’s mask, giving Ottawa a 5-4 lead in just five minutes in the third set.

Avalanche’s sloppy play continued, and Nichushkin scored a penalty soon after the goal. During this penalty case, Tyson Jost and Tyler Ennis both went into the box after Ennis’s elbow. Jost made an exception to this and added minors suitable for Ennis’ elbow sentencing.

Jost’s well-deserved power game turned out to be Avalanche’s spark when Mikko Rantanen rose to the scoreboard with a huge goal and leveled the game after just over ten minutes of play.

In the following minutes, the game was very smooth and both teams got seats. With the match likely to lead to overtime, the third-round “hustle” line cashed out, giving Avalanche the lead after less than two minutes of play. This line; Nichushkin, Alex Newhook and Logan O’Connor worked their way to the game’s winning goal when Newhook found the net after kicking it off nicely.

Ottawa called for overtime after the Newhook goal and would pull Gustavsson for the remaining 90 seconds. It was too little too late for Kadri to finish his monster game with an empty goal to confirm a victory for Colorado.

Takeaway

The Avalanche attack flies despite the absence of Byram, Compher and MacKinnon. Makar and Kadri were on the second level tonight and Nichushkin was also fantastic throughout. The team scored seven goals tonight, and without Gustavsson’s great goalkeeper, it could easily have been ten. Even the fourth line looked sharp against the considerably overwhelmed Senators team.

It’s good that the attack snapped because Kuemper wasn’t sharp tonight. The scoreboard now read Uganchen. Only one of the goals stood out particularly badly, but Kuemper gave up long rebounds and had more than one moment when he seemed to hover in his crease. While it didn’t matter tonight against the bad Senators team, it has to look ahead with the Avalanche goalkeepers.

Future

Colorado (9-5-1) welcomes Anaheim (10-6-3) to the city on Wednesday, November 24th. The disc will drop at 7 p.m.
