Sydney is preparing for a massive tennis summer, as the calendar revealed

Sydney will host one of its biggest tennis summers after Tennis Australia (TA) confirmed its schedule ahead of next year’s Australian Open.

With an updated calendar focusing on NSW, South Australia and Victoria before New Year’s first Grand Slam, Sydney will be at the epicenter for two weeks before the ATP Cup (January 1-9) before the new Sydney Tennis Classic. (January 9-15).

That means two weeks of top-notch tennis in Harbor City, while Adelaide mirrors those dates in its own WTA and ATP tournaments. Melbourne Park has room for three events, two WTA and one ATP tournament 3-9. January.

But Sydney is likely to be the main focus, especially if world number one Novak Djokovic makes the decision to travel to represent Serbia at the ATP Cup, a 16-team ATP event. Djokovic has not yet confirmed his vaccination position, but the lure of the record-breaking 21st Grand Slam is a powerful elixir.

The ATP Cup would be his logical starting point. The 20-time grand slam winner has critics, but he sheds his heart to play for his nation and inspires Serbia to win at the opening of the ATP Cup in 2020.

The ATP Cup will be played at two venues, Ken Rosewall Arena and Qudos Bank Arena, while the one-off Sydney Tennis Classic opens at Ken Rosewall Arena next week. It includes the WTA 500 tournament and the ATP 250 tournament.

These tournaments are part of the 17th tournament, which will be played before the Australian Open, which begins January 17 after extensive work by the TA to take into account state border restrictions and ensure that incoming athletes can move freely between events.

One of the big victims of the summer has been Brisbane International, which had become a key WTA and ATP point before the Australian Open. Pat Rafter Arena will be released for the second year in a row in January, and Memorial Drive in Adelaide will redeem for a lucrative period.
