Cricket: Black Caps collapse as India shows class on day three of first test

It took until the third day, but New Zealand eventually had to spin in the first test against India.

The encouraging platform was mostly wasted when the hosts ’spin trio stopped Black Caps from advancing in Kanpur, and tourists fell 197-1 to be transported after tea by 296 in response to 345 in India.

India reached 14-1 in the stump, leading 63 runs, and with all the chasing more than 200 in the fourth inning, it is unbeatably difficult for Black Caps to repeat the great performance of the second day as they continue on the fourth day.

The third day started with Black Caps 129-0 and reached 151-0 before Will Young (89) left. He and Tom Latham (95) didn’t make it to the top three, but instead watched as the older trio behind them overturned some of the good work.

Axar Patel (5-62) was mainly responsible for when New Zealand suffered from Zone 26, resulting in a 5-45 loss, the left arm taking on the scalp of Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls and Latham.

Ravi Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja also scored on both sides when the Black Caps dropped to 249-6, and despite defensive tail resistance, the runs were difficult to get as their innings ended in 49 runs out of India’s overall result.

Young only added 14 to his night score before he was left behind in Ashwin’s bowling – the growing turn showed the following – but that was enough to set him a new record.

Meanwhile, Latham continued to show why he is considered one of the best spins against Black Caps, and he looked comfortable and on a good course in his 12th test year.

Since only three New Zealand beaters had participated in this series on a previous test experience in India and as Kane Williamson and Taylor both fell cheap, the Black Caps owed Latham gratitude despite his possible stumbling.

He was breathed when Ashwin struck him at the age of 66, and it was not given until India inexplicably decided not to check, and repetitions show the delivery would have been cleaned up in the middle and away.

Latham had progressed to the age of 82 by southwest, but the meal would not have been as tasty as he lost his partner just before the break.

In the second set with a new ball, Umesh Yadav got one seam sharp enough to break into Williamson’s defense and sent the skipper 18.

This important door gave India an advantage in the first session, which they continued in the second.

Taylor had already survived one incident when faced with Patel, and exchange point guard KS Bharat was unable to complete a difficult stumbling block. But Bharat quickly saved himself by taking a great catch as Taylor tried to defend, after hitting a little turn and dropping to 11.

Nicholls ’stay was short as Patel rose for another, the ball staying down to slip through the striker’s attempt to strike and hit the platform.

Latham next crashed, leaving his wrinkles in a defensive attempt and betraying the tournament before Jadeja bowled his debut on Rach’s Ravindra 13 to complete the collapse.

After the tea, Tom Blundell was unlucky to see Patel’s feed shoot down the ground and bowle his positions, but with the balls remaining low throughout the test, it made his decision to hit 94 balls carefully for 13 runs at best questionable.

Kyle Jamieson was similarly static on an undeniably hard finish, but after grafting 23 runs on 74 balls, he either changed his strategy or lost his patience on the 75th, and an omnipotent explosion was fixed on Wednesday’s border.

The New Zealand inning ended soon after, but Jamieson soon returned to action and bowled purely with Shubman Gill on his first ball.

In just his ninth test, Jamieson became the fastest New Zealander with 50 test points, and he will likely have to get a few more on Day 4 to keep Black Caps a chance to win.
