Michael Clarken chose Alex Carey instead of Josh Inglis

Former Australian captain Michael Clarke has asked South Australian doorman Alex Carey to wear Australian gloves in the first test, while his redbacks coach Json Gillespie has compared him to Adam Gilchrist.

Carey has not yet earned a bumper green, but has played 45 ODIs and 38 T20Is in Australia to enter 45 first-class games, averaging 34.73 on the racket.

On Sunday, the 30-year-old sent a message to the appellants by making 101 runs against 93 balls in Queensland in the One-Day Cup.

“He has international experience, he has experience around the world, he is the captain of Australia, he has performed very strongly in other forms of play and he has been in and around that Australian line-up for some time.

“There’s a lot of synergy for me between when Adam Gilchrist was first elected after his 29th birthday and when he was in the One Day lineup for years and Alex Carey now, who has just turned 30, is at his best.

“I say he’ll take him in, he’s ready to leave, his game is in great shape, and he’ll do a good job for Australia if given the chance.”

Australian assistant coach Andrew McDonald said on Sunday that the appellants’ decision is still “in the air”.

“I think if it had been clear, it would have become an announcement, so I’m sure the electorate will take all the information about the last match today, I think at home before we turn our attention to the test match,” he said.

THE “GREAT UHPALO” OF AUSTRALIA IN CUMMINS

Former England fast Steve Harmison believes Australia may have shot himself in the leg by making Pat Cummins Test captain over Steve Smith.

Cummins was announced on Friday as Australia’s 47th test captain and Smith will be replaced by Tim Painen as his deputy.

Talking about the subject Cricket team podcast, Harmison said he believes the decision is more appropriate for England than Australia.

“I don’t think this is old Australia … it’s a big invitation,” he said.

“I think England would be happier with Cummins than Steve Smith. If you put too much pressure on Pat in the Ashes, it could prove a difference because both punch units are fragile and can be accessed.

“I see this decision as a big gamble for Australia. If there is no one else, so good. I am not Australian, but I think if you had a natural leader there who had done the job in the past, you should go with him.

“If I were Australian, I wouldn’t have a problem with Steve Smith’s return.”

DEFENSE OF ENGLAND

Speaking in the midst of the racism scandal in England, England leader Ashley Giles said the national team was not prepared to accept any discrimination from the crowd in Ashes this summer.

He said he would support Captain Joe Root if he decided to suspend the game in the event of a possible racial abuse.

Giles says cricket needs to do much better in the fight against racism, but asked that those who had made “mistakes” be given a second chance.

“If zero tolerance means to me that we cut people off, we don’t give a second chance, we don’t give people a chance to rehabilitate, then I think we have a problem,” he said.

“We all make mistakes and we do it again, but we have to be able to put up with and train and rehabilitate, otherwise people won’t open up, they’re not going to share their experiences.”

PERTH TEST MAKES MORE DOUBT

Melbourne and Sydney are said to have confirmed their offer to host a second Ashes Test as doubts continue around the Perth finals of the series.

Newscorp senior cricketer Robert Craddock reports that executives behind closed doors are pessimistic about Perth’s ability to host the Fifth Test due to state border restrictions.

WACA chief Christina Matthews said over the weekend that Perth had a 50-50 chance to host the test in January, even though eastern state authorities consider the actual probability much lower, Craddock reports.

England has said in the past that it will not go into tough quarantine on the mid-tour because it has already completed its work cycle when it arrives in Queensland.
