The Montreal Canadiens has cleaned the house.
The team announced Sunday afternoon that they have relieved Vice President and GM Marc Bergevin of their duties. Assistant GM, Trevor Timmins and Executive Vice President Paul Wilson have also been fired from the organization.
With a similar transfer, the Canadiens appointed former New York Rangers GM Jeff Gorton as vice president of hockey operations.
Gorton previously served as general manager of the New York Rangers from 2015 to May 2021, before he was fired along with team president John Davidson. Prior to joining the Rangers, Gorton spent 13 years in the Boston Bruins in a variety of roles, including as interim GM from 2005-2006.
This red Sunday is not an actual shock.
The Canadiens are currently second in the Atlantic Division after the Stanley Cup final in less than a calendar year. Despite brief flashes of competency over the years, the team has never succeeded in building a sustainable model of success under Bergevin’s leadership, while the Timmins-led scouting department performed perhaps the worst in evaluating first-round abilities. the whole league.
Only two of the Canadiens ’eight first-round selections since 2012 have remained on the team today. The only survivor of the NHL is Ryan Poehling, who has scored seven goals in 37 matches. The other is Logan Mailloux, who was chosen by the team despite the fact that his camp had publicly asked groups not to select him after Mailloux was convicted of a sex offense earlier that year.
In the future, the Canadiens has promised to work with Gorton to select a new GM that can “communicate with fans in both English and French, limiting their options when switching even before the search begins.
Needless to say, there is never a dull moment in Montreal.
