Novak Djokovic is unlikely to play in the match Australian Open If the rules for Covid-19 vaccinations aren’t relaxed, world number one Srdjan Djokovic said.
The organizers of the first grand slam of the year have said that all players must be vaccinated to participate.
Djokovic has so far refused to disclose whether he has been vaccinated, and his father told Serbian TV Prva that the governing body Tennis Australia’s attitude towards vaccinating players was blackmail.
When it comes to vaccines and non-vaccines, it is the personal right of each of us to vaccinate us or not. No one has the right to step into our vicinity, news site B92 quoted Srdjan as saying.
Under these extensions and conditions [Djokovic] probably won’t happen [play]. I wouldn’t do that. And he’s my son, so you decide for yourself.
Djokovic has won nine grand slam titles in Melbourne Park, including this year’s tournament, and shares a record of 20 men’s grand slam titles with Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal.
Nadal has confirmed he will play in Melbourne Park in January, but Federer will skip the tournament as he recovers from a second knee surgery.
The Australian Open will begin on January 17th.
