Johanna Konta says her performance in Grand Slam tournaments and representing the UK at the Olympics are highlights of her career after she announced she would stop playing tennis.
Former British number one Johanna Konta has stopped playing tennis.
The 30-year-old has struggled with a constant knee problem for the past couple of years and dropped to 113th place in the rankings.
Konta reported on social media with a post titled “Grateful.”
A statement on his Twitter profile reads, “I’m probably the most used to this word in my career, and the word I think explains it best at the end.
“My player career is over and I’m so incredibly grateful for the career it came from.
“All the evidence showed that I can’t ‘get’ into this profession. However, my happiness came true in the people who came into my life and affected my existence in ways beyond tennis.”
“I’m so incredibly grateful for these people. You know who you are.
“Through my perseverance and the guidance of others, I was able to live my dream. I became what I wanted and said as a child.
“How incredibly lucky I consider myself. How grateful I am.”
Kontta’s best performance at Wimbledon came in 2017 when he made it to the semi-finals
Born in Australia to Hungarian parents, Konta moved to Europe to pursue a tennis career as a teenager, settled in Eastbourne with her family and gained British citizenship in 2012.
Konta’s rise to the top of the game began when he took Britain’s number one spot, which he held for nearly six years.
The following year, he reached his first Grand Slam semi-final at the Australian Open and then rose to the top 10.
His best season was undeniably in 2017, when he became the first British player after Virginia Wade to make it to the Wimbledon semi-finals, winning the biggest four championship of his career at the Miami Open and finishing fourth in the world rankings.
Konta dropped off the list in 2018, but rose again the following year, reaching the second Grand Slam semi-finals at the French Open as well as the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and the US Open.

Britain Billie Jean King Cup captain Anne Keothavong added: “What Johanna achieved on the field was incredible, but her professional ability set her apart from others.

Konta will soon marry his fiancé Jackson Wade, and has made no secret of his desire to start a family, which he did not want to do alongside his career.
She is retiring as the best British female player in the last 30 years and has received widespread praise for her professionalism and application.
Rumors had grown Konta would not start in 2022 and after being suspended in August due to a groin injury, he had not been seen at his practice at the National Tennis Center.
Her last match was a three-round loss to Karolina Muchova at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati.
