MARSHALL – The Marshall Girls hockey team opened the Big South conference game on Tuesday and tried to recover from a 3-1 loss to Minnehaha United over the weekend. Meanwhile, their opponent, Luverne, said they would continue their hot start in the attack after scoring 42 goals in the first five games of the season. With a strong attack, the Cardinals did just that and won 9-3 at the Red Baron Arena and Expo.

Marshall coach Cassi Weiss said they started out atypically and just couldn’t recover.

“It’s not our game, we’re not playing from top to bottom, it’s just not us. It’s really disappointing that we survived like this for a period and a half. Weiss said. “We started raising it towards the end of the second and then we continued on the third, but when seven goals fall in a period and a half, you can’t really crawl out of it, it’s really hard and we just couldn’t close that gap anymore.”

Luverne got off to a fast start and scored a goal in just 19 seconds during the opening period and took the lead 1-0. Marshall got the chance to play a few minutes later, but was unable to take advantage of it, and the teams switched back and forth for almost the rest of the game until Luverne found a goal with 54 seconds left. period moved their lead to 2-0. However, the Cardinals didn’t score another goal there with only half a second left and moved to a 3-0 lead for the second set.

Luverne maintained his momentum in the second frame and scored 12:44 and added another goal 11:27 and scored 5-0. However, the Cardinals didn’t finish as it scored two more goals at 9:55 and 8:10, raising their lead to 7-0. But Marshall wasn’t without a fight, as Kendal Beernaert found the goal from Shelby Ormberg’s entry point with 4:39 left in the frame to get the MHS on the board before Leah Schaefer scored a short goal. Olivia Penske’s feed just 17 seconds later cut the deficit to 7-2.

However, Luverne got the answer and scored in the second set 1:54 and took the 8-2 lead after two sets. The Cardinals then added a second goal 7:04 left in the third set before Marshall got a goal from Tessa Gannott 2:23 to take it to the 9-3 final.

Luverne defeated Marshall 43-17. Belle Deutz rejected 21 and Paige Christianson rejected 13 times.

Marshall (2-3-1) will face New Ulm on Thursday at 7 p.m.
