Maple Leafs destroyed Avalanchen 8-3

Colorado Avalanche and Toronto Maple Leafs came into tonight’s game and looked like two of the hottest teams in the league. Only one of them performed tonight when freshly shaved Austin Matthews did a hat trick in the Avs 8-3 series.

It wasn’t pretty, as Darcy Kuemper was forced out of the game before it even started due to an upper body injury. Jonas Johansson arrived late. Terrible defense in front of him, it was rough from then on.

Season 1

Toronto came to fly as William Nylander rushed into the zone and blew one Johansson 1-0. Just three minutes later, Jason Spezza grabbed one of Johansson’s hand, which flashed to the back of the net, making the situation 2-0 early.

Avs had nothing for the high-flying Leafs, as it was the best goal of the night game from Matthew’s first goal. He found himself all alone in front and he turned it over to Johansson and made it 3-0.

Avs had hope late when Samuel Girard got it at the top of the area and overtook Jack Campbell with just one second left at 3-1.

Season 2

In the middle of the second frame, it looked like Avs had a chance to roar back into this game. After gaining momentum in the second, Nazem Kadri passed Campbell to his knees. That’s right, the situation was 3-2 when everything was played.

Toronto raged from there and never looked back. Travis Dermott got one back less than a minute later and scored 4-2, and four minutes later captain John Tavares made his own point, increasing his lead to 5-2.

Season 3

When Avs landed three times, they wanted a miraculous return home. Unfortunately, things started completely wrong. Matthews broke through a seemingly flat defense and overtook Johansson to lead 6-2.

Matthews finished it from the close circle, over Johansson’s shoulder to send the hats down from the stands and demoralize the 7-2 lead to Avs.

Things only got worse for Avs. Two minutes later, Pierre Engvall recorded his third goal of the season, only to make matters worse and made it 8-2. Avs was ready at this point, just wanting to get off the ice and get out of Toronto in a hurry.

Kadri scored the 20th goal of his career against his former team to comfort the power game with a simple hint down, resulting in an 8-3 final score.

Takeaway

The performance of tonight is difficult to judge based on a few factors. First, Avs had been dominant before tonight and they had a slightly different look. Nathan MacKinnon’s return was highly anticipated, where he recorded two passes from his return. However, the loss of Ryan Murray and Kuemper before the game was detrimental and the key to defeat.

As Johansson is not prepared for the start of tonight, he is certainly to blame for some of the goals. But more often than not, the defense left him to try. Bowen Byram struggled all night and found himself in the wrong place several times, leading to one of eight goals tonight. They have to press the big reset button before they can use it in less than 24 hours in Montreal.

When Kuemper was injured, Avs had to rely on emergency goalkeeper Jett Alexander to sit on the bench before Justus Annunen got to Toronto from Colorado with a late call. Although he didn’t see any gaming activity, he gets to tell a great story in his study classes tomorrow. As for Avs, it is not yet known who will receive the invitation tomorrow in Montreal. Jared Bednar discusses the matter with Joe Sakic this morning to see if Johansson is looking for a better performance or if Annunen is getting her first NHL start in her career.

Future

As much has been mentioned here, Avs is visiting Montreal Canadiens in their second game this five-game road trip and in their second game this in a row. The drop in the disc is at 5 p.m.
