ANN ARBOR, me. – The University of Michigan set a second school record for its graduation rate (GSR) when the NCAA released the 2021 GSR and Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) reports for all NCAA Division I institutions on Thursday (December 2).

Michigan made an all-time record high with a four-year average GSR of 95 percent, up 14 percentage points from 2010 and one point higher than last year. The MFA’s four-year moving average FGR, at 81 percent, was the highest ever for the 2020, 2017, and 2018 reports.

In addition, 14 of Michigan’s 25 reported college sports programs earned full GSR points.

The NCAA also released its overall Division I national averages: the four-year GSR for all member schools is 89 percent.

Among the Big Ten Conference institutions, Michigan had the third highest GSR 95 and the third best FGR score 81. Northwestern led the conference with 98 and 92 points, while Minnesota was second with 96 and 82..

Michigan, Nebraska and Rutgers are the only Big Ten schools to have full GSR values ​​in both men’s and women’s basketball. Michigan football’s GSR score of 96 ranks second among league schools after Northwestern (97), and the UM is the only school to achieve complete grades in both basketball and football with more than 90 GSRs.

Ever since the NCAA began collecting GSR data in the 1995 freshman class, UM’s softball team has made complete 100 percent results in every 17 annual reports. Women’s golf has had full GSR scores for the past 14 years, men’s tennis for the past 12 years and men’s golf for the past 11 years.

Both GSR and FGR are based on the number of athletes eligible for athletic support who enroll in the school each year. Several variables can affect these figures, such as student-athletes who choose vocational or educational opportunities outside their original institution, and student-athletes in good academic standing who choose to drop out of school.

The FGR is mandated by the U.S. government and reflects the number of athletes who have received a scholarship who enter an educational institution in a given academic year and graduate from the same educational institution within six academic years. It does not take into account the transfer of students to or from school; The FGR counts transfers as non-graduates and is therefore typically less than the GSR.

GSR takes into account students who transfer to an educational institution and does not penalize educational institutions that have athletes who choose to transfer even though they are still in good academic standing.
