Divock Origi was late for a possible change of season, but chose a moment to let it go. On days like these, titles are won and everyone in attendance knew it, not least everyone who jumped away. Liverpool bench and celebrated excessively when the Wolves resistance finally broke down.
The match, which the tenor rose as the temperature dropped, had seemed to remember Diogo Jotan’s amazing failure before his teammates ended clinically four minutes after extra time, ensuring no missed opportunity was needed.
The wolves, who were always in the game but withstood tough pressure at every half, seemed to have survived when José Sá played the amazingly late Sadio Mané. But they held on, and they had one last hurdle to jump as Virgil van Dijk considered his options before sending a long, diagonal feed to Mohamed Salah.
Perhaps the first touch of the Egyptian, who took the bounce perfectly and sent him into the box, was simply too good; perhaps left-wing defender Kia-Jana Hoever, who was introduced against her former club 90. minute and lagged behind, had not yet gained momentum. It was probably a bit of both, but Salah’s temper was not questioned in picking Origi or any guesswork about the goal that broke under Sán’s turn after the touch.
“We had to keep going, and the legend Divock Origi finished it for us. I love it,” Klopp radiated, whose post-match comments were sad for his eternal assistant striker. The minute is great, but if Divock scores, it’s even better.
That meant Liverpool could double benefit from Chelsea’s mistake at London Stadium and end the day second.
They took control about the 25th minute, but against opponents whose matches are rarely high on both ends of the field, they had a thin grater to be fed at half-time. So the main shot, which headed far away towards the mockers of his former audience, was as close as they came, even though Salah was denied one brilliant defense from Romain Saïss.
The wolves were getting more and more scratchy, but compact and, as Bruno Lage later explained, intending not to get caught up in the transition.
Sá deftly rescued Thiago Alcãntara shortly after half-time and at a time when Wolves had reason to feel that luck was smiling in their path. When Sá ran out of the left wing but only managed to remove Saïssin, the ball ran freely to Jota to advance into the penalty area.
When Sá was nowhere to be found, he didn’t have a clear run and time to pick his place, even as Conor Coady and Max Kilman pulled toward the goal, and when he had reached the six-yard line, waited for the net wave.

Instead, he exploded straight into the middle line of Coady to the general surprise when the slightest accuracy would have been enough. Who had returned to haunt Molineux with the winner last season, but this was a mistake that could have stayed in Liverpool next May.
In the whirlwind of wind and rain on the sheets, it felt like the kind of winter evening that this always atmospheric place could cherish. Adama Traoré forced Fabinho and Andy Robertson into robberies and yellow cards, respectively, but Wolves was inaccurate when he broke and Lagen was constantly seen urging them to resist the fervor. “It’s frustrating because when I come into the locker room and see the faces of my players, they did everything as planned and didn’t deserve to be lost,” Lage said.
Given that Chelsea is the only team to have limited Liverpool to one goal throughout the season, Lage’s team can certainly be said to have played respectfully. But they were in full swing by the end, and Klopp was finally rewarded for his courage in bringing Origin to Jordan Henderson in the 68th minute, further raising him.
“It’s really important and it feels really great,” he said. “It was like in our good old days, two years ago when we really needed it.

“It’s an important skill to stay positive: it wasn’t needed too often this season, but thank God we were able to show it today.”
Warmest thanks to Origi. “Top striker, top boy, that’s it,” Klopp continued.
– He has made some of the most important goals in the history of his club. This could have been another.
