Montreal: Former Canadian Open USA champion Bianca Andreescu said Monday she will not be taking part in next month’s Australian Open as she recovers from two season-disruptions. COVID-19 pandemic.

The 21-year-old is on World List 46, who missed tournaments this season after signing a deal coronavirus in April, said he intended to use his absence in Melbourne as an opportunity to recharge.

“Especially this year, I spent several weeks in solitary quarantine, which affected me greatly – both mentally and physically,” Andreescu said on Twitter.

“Also, my grandmother spent several weeks in the intensive care unit because of a COVID infection, which really hit me.

“For many days I didn’t feel like myself, especially when I was training and / or playing matches. It felt like I was carrying the world on my shoulders … the collective grief and turmoil around me and it took its toll.

“That’s why I’m not starting through Australia this year, but I’m taking the extra time to reflect, practice and prepare for the upcoming 2022 tennis season.”

Preparations for the Australian Open for the first Grand Slam of the season are overshadowed by speculation as to whether Novak Djokovic, on the world’s men’s list, will take part.

It is due to the decision of the Australian authorities to admit only fully vaccinated players.

The Australian Open progressed this year, but players had to spend two weeks in a hotel quarantine, crowds were restricted and a five-day quick lock was called in the middle of the event.
