Mitchell Girls Hockey Starts Season With Goal Scoring and Improves to Finish in Third Place Last Season

The Marlins, who have been training since early October, are already 4-0 and have no plans to slow down. In four games, Mitchell has scored 39 goals and handed only seven, and the experience probably has a lot to do with it.

All of Marlins, who finished third in the state tournament last year, will return in 2021-22, and will have two key players – Brooke Jarman and Kate Nash – for the entire 2021-22 season when they joined the team midway through. through last season.

Jarman already has 14 goals and four assists this season. Nash and Kelsey Amick, who are the top scorers of the season, each have seven goals left and three and nine assists. In addition to the striker who led 199 shots in Mitchell’s four games, coach Chris Tronnes expects a strong defensive core to be another strength and believes the university depth will only improve during the season.

“I’d like to be able to roll all three rows consistently to save our feet a bit, but some younger girls are coming along,” Tronnes said. – I think we’ll make it through the season.

Marlins ’goal is to continue to improve as they prepare for what they hope will be the second state tournament. In each of the last three seasons, Mitchell has finished third in the state, and Aberdeen has proven to be an obstacle to which the Marlins have stumbled every time. This season, however, Tronnes is optimistic about the team’s ability to take this next step.

“I think they’re really trying to beat teams like Aberdeen and Sioux Falls – the teams we’re close to, but we haven’t gotten over the question,” Tronnes said. “Hopefully this year we’ll make it happen.”

Although Marlins has not yet been tested throughout the game when they take on the ice again for three matches in three days, the opportunity to measure themselves against both programs is awaited. Aberdeen arrives in Mitchell on Dec. 17 before Marlins plays at Sioux Falls on Dec. 19.

If the Marlins do well in these races, it will boost self-confidence early in the season. Nevertheless, the ultimate goal is to get into the state tournament and perform at a high level.

“There are expectations for the team this year when talking to people across the state, so hopefully they’ll be able to respond to that, and I think they’ll do,” Tronnes said.
