Why Warriors ’Steve Kerr believes the NBA has fallen into a 3-point trigger

With only 24 games in the NBA season 2021-22, the league’s three-point average has hit a low of 18 seasons.

Currently, at the league level, players are shooting together at 34.7 percent, the lowest value since the 2003-2004 season.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr joined Damon & Ratto on 95 July at The Game on Tuesday night, where he was asked why he believes the league has had such a historic recession in 3-point shots.

“I think it happened this year that the rule change has meant that shooters aren’t protected so much,” Kerr said. “So it happens that you get a lot more skipped three points this year, which would have been possible. It’s been called a mistake in recent years. That would be my best guess as to why the percentage has dropped.”

The rule change to which Kerr refers is The NBA’s effort to discourage players from making “open, sudden, or abnormal non-basketball moves.” Simply put, referees have curbed the general crime hunt in recent years.

Kerr’s theory makes sense. Many sharp shooters around the league had apparently mastered the ability to enter errors at or near the perimeter. When fewer penalties are awarded, more failed shots are not wiped out.

Warriors superstar Steph Curry was known to blame the bait from time to time, but not nearly as often as others in the league. This season, Curry has fired 41.6 percent from the three-point range, his lowest point (excluding through 2019-2020, where he played five games) since the 2016-2017 season, when he shot 41.1 percent.

Even if Curry regressed by 3 percentage points, Golden State is still the league’s third-best team, shooting 37.6 per cent, behind only Atlanta Hawks at 38.6 per cent and Charlotte Hornets at 38.4 per cent.
