Iowa Football needed good news after Saturday’s 42-3 loss to Michigan in the Big Ten Championship. It got it on Wednesday in the form of Xavier Nwankpa.
A five-star security guard from Pleasant Hill (IA) in Southeast Polk announced his commitment to Hawkeyes on his 18th birthday. He selected them ahead of the other finalists Ohio State and Notre Dame. His 31 reported bids also included Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and USC.
Nwankpa became Iowa’s 12th well-known verbal commitment in the 2022 recruitment class. Four of them are predicted to play defense.
Southeast Polk won the Class 5A state championship last month. Nwankpa was named Player of the Year in Iowa for 26 tackles (23 solos), four cuts and a bag defense. He took 33 assists for 391 yards and five touchdowns with eight moves for 49 yards. He returned two kicks for 116 yards and a score, and brought back eight pounds and 191 yards.
Competitors rank Nwankpa as safety number one and 20th nationally in the ’22 class.
