Maine Nordiques adds two junior hockey veterans

Maine Nordiques has shaken its list by exchanging a couple of experienced junior hockey players.

Nordiques added striker Henry Thrun and defender Martin Marnauzs to the list. Both players have experience in the North American Hockey League.

Thrun started the year at the British Columbia Hockey League at the Cranbrook Bucks. The 20-year-old Grand Rapids, Michigan, scored a goal and four assists in 12 games.

He is committed to Western Michigan University, a Division I school that plays in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference. Former Hebron Academy standout Luke Grainger is currently on the Broncos list.

“I think he’s looking for variety in the scenery,” Maine Nordiques coach Matt Pinchevsky said of Thrun. “We have a lot to know about his game (after playing against him two seasons ago) and how he runs his business and where he’s going. NCHC is a deep conference, and he’s headed to Western Michigan next year.

Nordiques bought Thrun’s NAHL rights from the Kenai River Brown Bears, where he played in 2019-21, in exchange for striker Kristopher Zapata.

Thrun played with current Maine Nordiques striker Patrick Schemedlin during an invitation to the U.S. Hockey League’s Omaha Lancers for the 2019-2020 season.

Zapata scored this season in 12 matches in Nordiques. Last year in Maine Nordiques Academy 18U he scored 12 goals and gave 18 assists in 48 games.

Marnauzs comes from the Northeast Generals in return for aspects to come. A defender from the left scored three goals and made four assists in 21 matches with Generals. Pinchevsky has coached him earlier in the summer’s youth hockey tournaments.

“(Marnauzs) has been in the league for two years and he is (2002 born player),” Pinchevsky said. “He’s an experienced defender who helps us in many situations and gives stability and competition to us.”

To make room for Marnauzs on the list, Nordiques has released defender Hank McDonough, whose team bought El Paso Rhinos on November 5th. McDonough had one pass in seven Maine games. Pinchevsky said the team is working with McDonough to find another team this season.

Thrun and Marnauzs will be in line-up at Nordiques against Jamestown Rebels at The Colisee on Friday and Saturday. Both games start at 7 p.m.

NORDIQUES THE FUTURE

Nordiques also added strikers Oliver Genest from Sanford, Laurent Trépanier (Saint Basile-le-Grand, Quebec) and defender Seth Murch (Lee, New Hampshire) to the team’s tie list. All three will play for the Seacoast Performance Academy 17U in Exeter, New Hampshire.

Genest leads the 17U team with 25 goals and 11 assists; Trépanier is the team’s third best scorer with 12 goals and 19 assists. Murch have five goals and 14 assists.

The three will be training with Nordiques this week and may be invited later this year.

“The coaching team and GM (Eric Soltys) are very pleased with what we saw (from them in practice),” Pinchevsky said. “They’re very professional; they’re very enthusiastic about their game and their researchers. All three are Ivy League student candidates.”

Pinchevsky will coach all three at the Seacoast Performance Academy in 2018-19.

MOORE IS COMMITTED TO THE NORTH

Andy Moore, who helped Greely win the Class B state championship in 2019 and 2020, will play Division I college hockey in Northeastern next year.

Moore was the draft choice for Twin City Thunder in 2019 and played with Thunder in the 2019-2020 season, making one pass.

Moore have scored three goals this season and scored three assists in 19 USHL matches with Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, who selected him in May.

Last year, Moore played for Boston Jr. Rangers, who won the Eastern Hockey League championship. He scored 19 goals and scored 28 assists in 38 regular season games. Moore was an EHL rookie of the year and selected for the league’s star team.

Jack Williams from Biddeford will also be playing at Northeastern next season. Williams currently plays for the USHL Muskegon Lumberjacks.

THUNDER’S TIERNEY BLESSING

Twin City Thunder defender Blake Tierney has been selected as the Defender of the Week for the North Division of the USPHL National Collegiate Development Conference.

The tour had an entry point and was a plus with two losses to Boston Jr. Bruins on Friday 6-4. On Saturday, he played nearly 22 minutes in victory over Northern Cyclones 3-1.

Tierney has four assists in nine games since he joined Thunder in early November.
