ORONO, Maine – It was another frustrating night at the Alfond Arena for the University of Maine men’s hockey team.
In their second consecutive game, the Black Bears took complete control of the game and overtook Union College 51-13. But they settled for a 1-1 overtime draw when Union goalkeeper Connor Murphy played with a great 50 fights, including saving the left pillow when Adam Dawen left.
There was no penalty shootout because it was not a conference game. Union is from ECAC, while UMaine is from Hockey East. The score is now 5-8-3. The teams will play again on Saturday at 5 p.m.
UMaine is now 1-11-4 after playing the seventh overtime and third consecutive game. It has now also been involved in 10 games where one goal or draw ends.
UMaine junior defender Adrien Bisson took the Black Bears 1-0 lead at the end of the first period, but freshman center Collin Graf equalized 4:41 at the start of the third set.
Tyler Watkins, who had missed the net with a great solo opportunity earlier in the episode, toured the corner and fed the puck to Ryan Sidorsk at the center, which turned the puck toward the net.
UMaine’s Matthew Thiessen blocked his left pillow, but the ball spread to Thiessen’s left-par Grafi. Graf had time to pull the puck back in his hand and lift it over Thiessen.
Bisson’s goal came in the first set at 1:45 and was the first time UMaine scored an opening goal after Bisson scored a 4-3 loss to UConn on November 5th.
That was nine games ago.
Lynden Breen scored and Dawson Bruneski scored. Bruneski got the puck for Breen, who plunged from the right side deep into the Union. Breen rotated back toward the top of the starting circle and slid the diagonal feed to Bisson at the left. Bisson’s shot from the crowded paint looked into the far post.
UMaine’s Tim Gould was a few cents away from giving the Black Bears the lead in the first two goals of the season early in the second set, but was robbed by senior defender Michael Ryan.
His shot deviated over Murphy’s shoulder and fell behind the goalkeepers. The puck was rolling over the finish line as vigilant Ryan hit it in the corner.
