BYU gives football coach Kalani Sitake a “unprecedented” new contract for 2027

BYU football coach Kalani Sitake has signed a new contract with the school for the 2027 season.

Although BYU did not publish the terms, it called Sitake’s new agreement “unprecedented” in a press release. Sitake is 48-28 in six seasons at BYU, which finished 13th in the final CFP ranking and went 10-2 this season. Cougars will face UAB on December 18 at the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl.

According to sources, Sitake spoke with Oregon earlier this week about his vacancy as head coach.

“There has been a lot of movement among college football head coaches in recent days and weeks,” BYU Sports Director Tom Holmoe said in a preparatory statement. “Today, I am excited to hear that Kalani will continue to be our leader, coach and mentor. Over the past 50 years, BYU has had only four head coaches. Consistency, creativity and culture have been our hallmarks. Kalani will continue to strengthen our football team culture and develop his young leadership learning. “I am grateful to Kalan and the Sitake family for their commitment to BYU.”

Sitake, 46, has directed BYU for 10 consecutive winning seasons for the first time since 2008 and 2009. Only Alabama’s Nick Saban and Cincinnati’s Luke Fickell have won more games since last season than Sitake (21).

BYU is scheduled to reach the Big 12 list in 2023.

“Both as a former player and a BYU fan, it is an honor to be the head coach at this magnificent university,” said Sitake, Cougars ’Defender in 1994 and 1997-2000. “I’m blessed to lead a football program full of huge young men, great coaches and staff, and some of the best fans in the world. We’re all excited about the opportunities ahead as we prepare to reach the big 12.”
