The change is equally difficult and exciting, which is why many who follow LSU’s football program closely have expressed conflicting feelings during the first 10 days of Brian Kelly’s era.
Natural getting used to both the list and the coaching staff inevitably happened regardless of who was chosen as the coach. Hiring Frank Wilson was welcomed with complete surprise and praise, but equally shocking was the news that longtime cornerback coach Corey Raymond was on his way to an SEC rival in Florida.
Gators coach Billy Napier is building a strong foundation by bringing in coaches who have managed to recruit in Louisiana, knowing how important this state is in every recruitment cycle. Florida will definitely be a program to watch in the coming seasons to see what appeal it may have to the local outlook, especially as Napier compares Kelly’s era in Baton Rouge.
Kelly brings defense coach Kerry Cooks to help in the secondary game. While at Notre Dame, Kelly has had several secondary coaches, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see another coach.
Around the program, it was equally sad when Kelly chose Jake Flint as the strength and fitness coordinator to replace Tommy Moffitt, a beloved member of the program. It’s one of those movements that’s hard to see when most were so used to what’s been normal.
“Jake Flint’s passion is to help student athletes reach their full potential, and I know he does just that for us at LSU,” Kelly said. “He understands the development and preparation of every student-athlete required for a championship-level competition. He has been an invaluable member of my staff for many years, and I am confident he is ready to take our strength and rehabilitation program to a new level.
Give Kelly the honor where it belongs. He shakes this LSU program in a hurry, and only time will tell if it’s for the better or for the worse.
This adjustment is also made through how the list must also be compiled. LSU have lost seven players to the transfer portal, three of whom have joined since Kelly was named head coach on Dec. 1, including quarterback Max Johnson.
As many seniors move out of the program at the end of this season, finding the right songs through the portal and recruiting for key roles such as quarterback, offensive line, defensive line, linebacker and cornerback is likely to weigh heavily at the moment.
With just 11 employees and a short time before the early signing season and so many non-aligned talent in Louisiana, it’s easy to see why Kelly, Wilson and staff have driven to several local recruitment points to get their case.
Just Thursday, Kelly and offensive line coach Brad Davis, who was recently announced as one of the staff members left in the program, were in Neville reviewing elite offensive Will Campbell.
A class whose core starts with Campbell and quarterback Walker Howard is a good place to start. But this class is full of talent in Louisiana, so all the big flaws reflect how well Kelly’s era begins, even if there’s little time to adjust.
But it is also important to remember why all this change has been necessary. This is a program that needed shaking at all levels after a mediocre 11-11 record after the national championships. It comes with difficult decisions related to the program list, staffing, and overall composition.
It is important to wait until all the evidence is on the table before making any extensive statements about what the immediate future of this program will look like.
