In the first half of the weekend’s doubles match, the Notre Dame men’s hockey team, ranked 8th in South Bend, defeated Michigan State on Friday night in a tight 3-2 goal. Both teams will return to the ice on Saturday as the Irish take their third consecutive win.

In Friday night’s match, Spartans jumped to a 2-0 lead after one period. Notre Dame then responded with three consecutive goals, two from senior defender Spencer Stastney. They were the first two goals of Stastney’s season. He now has nine points a year.
The Irish will qualify for Saturday’s match in season 12-4. They have won eight of their last nine matches.
Meanwhile, Michigan State has won five of their last seven matches despite Friday’s loss. The Spartans are 9-7-1 overall.
Michigan State’s lineup includes senior Drew DeRidder, one of the conference’s top goalkeepers. At the start of this year’s 11, DeRidder has stopped 94.1% of their shots, ranking at the top of the Big Ten leaderboard and sixth of all Division I goalkeepers.
