Lanning has made a name for himself as a defense coordinator for the Georgia Bulldogs in Kirby Smart’s playoffs, a team that has potentially been called one of the best defensive teams in modern football. Or at least they were before Alabama defeated the SEC in the Championship, but still it’s a unit that has garnered a lot of well-deserved praise.
Oregon’s new head coach has spent the last four seasons in Georgia, three as a defense coordinator and coach for outside mates. This season, the Bulldogs will be the country’s best defense in 2021, with a 12-1 record for the College Football playoffs.
While coach Lanning doesn’t have real head coach experience, many believe there are many benefits to hiring a 35-year-old coordinator. His coordinating abilities are certainly a huge blessing for a program that has gradually shifted to defensive football since the time of the Chip Kelly attack, but most of the new Lanning fans in Eugene are enthusiastic about his esteemed recruitment effort.
Clearly, Cristobal has shown the sports department and college football as a whole that there are more than ten top categories in the UO, and it is simply no longer possible to return to old recruitment practices. Lanning is currently the eighth best recruiter in 2021 247 sports.
Oregon fans suffered a second coaching holiday from their dream job, and were then dragged into a coaching search that officially included Chip Kelly, Justin Wilcox, Kalani Sitake and were rumored to include Lane Kiffin, Dave Aranda, Tom Herman and the bastard Urban Meyer. But in the end, it looks like we have a young coach we can be proud of (until he loses to Washington)!
