Greenwich Fairfield Prep (Wonderland), Tuesday, 6 p.m .: Monday will have a handful of games on opening day, but the only game scheduled for Tuesday is a beauty, ranking 5th in the GameTimeCT Top 10 in the number 1 guest (and two of the three teams that won first place). This match has not happened often.
Notre Dame-West Haven in West Warwick (RI), Friday at 6 p.m .: The Green Knights are opening their seasons; it would be just one of 20 matches for them, one of three matches scheduled for the first Friday of this season. Not only is it the first game planned outside of Connecticut for the CIAC team since February 23, 2020, as the state banned out-of-state competition last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. (Several teams had early races outside the state.) This is back to normal.
Hall at Southington / Coginchaug / Westbrook (Newington Ice Arena) Saturday, 7 p.m .: The first match between the two teams after the break-up of the long-running Hall / Southington partnership … is against each other. Happy reunion!
Cheshire at Sheehan (Choate), December 29 at 2 p.m .: Hockey Fights Cancer Day for these two teams and a special one for Rams coach Anthony Giusto, whose wife has survived the cancer.
Darien in Greenwich (Greenwich Skating Club), December 29 at 4pm: The Fairfield County Winter Classic version returns, like many other things, after a year’s break. The teams will meet again indoors at Darien Ice House on February 9 at 7:50 p.m.
Farmington Valley North Haven (Northford Ice Pavilion), December 31 at 1 p.m .: A small north-south battle between two prestigious Division II teams by the end of 2021.
Northwest Catholic at Simsbury Farms, Jan. 1 at 1 p.m .: Simsbury has two more outdoor games at Simsbury Farms, this one and January 17 against Farmington Valley Generals.
Fairfield Prep in Notre Dame-West Haven (Bennett), Jan. 8 at 1 p.m .: Eventually. The SCC canceled its Division I final last spring – the de facto state championship, No. 1 vs. No. 2 – for COVID-19 protocols. The two teams were declared co-champions. They are number one of the season vs. 2. They will return to the ice here, then on February 19 in Wonderland at 4pm and twice more. Ding, Ding.
Staples at McMahon / Norwalk (SoNo Ice House), Jan. 15, 7:30 p.m .: The DW Cup honors Dale Wehmhoff, who coached both teams before his death in 2018.
St. Joseph at Trumbull (The Rinks at Shelton), Jan. 17 at 7 p.m .: Crosstown rivals will face the Coach Eddy Cup in honor of the late St. Joseph coach Eddy LeMaire, who died in 2020.
