We are now living an early national signing day week, and the Illinois football team seems to be close to getting a new player for 2022.
Illin’s ability to defend was one of the biggest shocks of this past season. With very few new entrants, I fully expected the Illinois defense to struggle in 2021.
However, there was not much fighting. Defense coordinator Ryan Walters played the program well. Passport coverage was one of the areas that improved greatly. We gave up 237.1 yards per game in the air in 2020 to just 215.2 yards in the air, ranking 43rd in the country.
Illinois must continue to add songs to the secondary. I love what Walters did on the current list, but adding a person like Tyson Rooks would be helpful.
Rooks is a 6-foot, 180-pound defensive player from Glynn Academy and lives in Brunswick, Georgia. He It has not been rated or rated by 247Sports, but the talented Georgia product has a solid recruitment focus. He has about 13 scholarship offers, the biggest names of which are Minnesota, Florida Atlantic and Illinois.
Illinois football is making transfers to get Tyson Rooks into the 2022 class.
Illinois took part in the Rooks raffle for the first time on Dec. 2. They offered him a scholarship, and things seemed to change pretty quickly after that.
Rooks made an official visit to Georgia South on Dec. 3, and just last weekend he made a trip to Champaign to visit Illinois.
Just before the visit, Jeremy Werner of 247Sports presented a Crystal ball prediction where Rooks ends up landing. This prophecy favored Illini. Werner has six / 10 confidence in his choice, so it doesn’t seem too concrete.
If the prediction is true, this would be a solid addition to the Illinois list. The first thing that clearly comes to mind is the size of the Rooks. The 6-foot 5 defensive back is something Illinois hasn’t seen on the list in a long time, if ever.
Rooks played a lot in high school wide receiver position, so he knows how the attacking side of the ball reacts and knows the routes of the wide receiver. This helps him tremendously as a defender.
I think Rooks is a talented player who is ready to take on the role of defending defender of the All-Big Ten caliber. Hopefully Werner’s Crystal Ball Prediction comes true and Illinois adds to their family.
