Anton Khudobin Dallas Stars released him on Monday, according to Dallas Morning News.
If the goalkeeper is not redeemed by another NHL team by noon on Tuesday, he may be assigned to the American Hockey League in Texas.
Stars CEO Jim Nill told the newspaper that the move was made for two reasons: to free the seat from the list and the need for the 35-year-old goalkeepers to play games.
Khudobin is 3-3-1 with 3.73 goals against average and 0.873 rebounds in seven games (six starts) this season. He has not played since November 18th. He has one season left on his three-year, $ 10 million contract (average annual value of $ 3.33 million), which he signed on October 9, 2020.
Khudobin’s best NHL season came in 2019-20, when he helped make the Stars Stanley Cup final. He was 16-8-4 in 30 regular-season games with a rebound percentage of 0.930, the first of NHL goalkeepers to play at least 20 matches, and a 2.22 GAA to finish third.
During the Stanley Cup playoffs, Khudobin replaced injured Ben Bishop and won 14-10 with 2.69 GAA, 0.917 rebounds and one shutout in 25 games (24 starts). Stars lost in the Best of Seven final in six games to Tampa Bay Lightning.
In the four Star seasons, Khudobin is 47-39-17 with 2.53 GAA, 0.917 percent rebound and five locks. He was selected in the seventh round of the Minnesota Wild (No. 204) in the 2004 NHL Draft, and is 114-90-33 with 2.50 GAA, 0.916 rebounds and 11 shutouts in 257 matches in Wild’s Boston Bruins, Carolina. Hurricanes, Anaheim Ducks and Stars.
Nill said Saturday that Bishop will not be able to continue his NHL career due to a knee injury that limited him to three matches in the 2020 playoffs and kept him out all last season.
Braden Holtby (5-6-0, 2.39 GAA, 0.923 percent savings) and Jake Oettinger (5-1-0, 1.52 GAA, 0.951 rebounds) have started five games since Khudobin last played.
