Aguero got into the tests after he left the field holding his chest in a match in Barcelona on October 30th.

Argentina and Barcelona star Sergio Aguero announced he would quit football just over a month after the 33-year-old was diagnosed with heart disease.

The former Manchester City player signed a two-year deal with Barcelona this year but played just five matches, scoring one goal against Real Madrid before being taken to hospital for “chest pain” after a home game with Alaves in October.

“I have decided to stop playing professional football,” Aguero said at a news conference in Camp Noussa on Wednesday.

“It’s a very difficult moment. The decision I made is about my health… I made that decision a week ago. When they did the first test at the clinic, the medical staff called and told me there was a very high chance I wouldn’t be able to continue playing.

“I was still processing everything when one of the doctors said straight to me,‘ That’s enough. ’” He said.

“I’ve decided to stop playing football.”

Aguero, commonly known by his nickname “When,” began his career at the Independiente in his native Argentina before moving to Europe in 2006 to sign Atletico Madrid.

He won the Europa League in his time on the Spanish team and then moved to the City in 2011.

A decade later, Aguero left the Premier League as their all-time top scorer with 260 goals, the most famous of which is his injury time strike against Queens Park Rangers in May 2012, which won the Premier League championship.

He won five Premier League championships in the City as well as one FA Cup and six League Cups.

“I want to share my gratitude with everyone, no matter where I played… Atletico in Madrid… Manchester City… Barca,” he said.

“We all support”

Barcelona President Joan Laporta said Aguero had “all our support” wished him “all the best.”

Former Argentine teammate Kevin De Bruyne hailed Aguero as one of the “best strikers of all time.”

Aguero will retire at the end of the year, marked by Christian Eriksen from Denmark, who had a heart attack while playing for Finland at the European Championships in June.

Eriksen was later fitted with a pacemaker, but is not allowed to play in Serie A as a result.

French World Cup winner Lilian Thuram retired at the age of 36 in 2008 when a doctor in Paris Saint-Germain revealed heart disease.

Aguero’s retirement means he will lose the opportunity to represent Argentina at next year’s World Cup in Qatar.

However, he helped his country win the Copa American in Brazil earlier this year and collected his 100th race during that tournament.

In Argentina, Aguero scored 41 times in 101 games, putting him third on the national team’s all-time goal list – after making his debut for the senior team in 2006.
