Tennis news Karolina Pliskova out of the 2022 Australian Open due to a hand injury

Karolina Pliskova has withdrawn from next month’s Australian Open and two warm-up tournaments due to an injury to her right hand during training.

Officials at the Australian Open today confirmed the withdrawal of the world’s fourth-ranked player and said in a tweet: “I wish you a speedy recovery.”

Pliskova said earlier on social media, “Unfortunately, I was injured in my right hand during practice yesterday, and I can’t play in Adelaide, Sydney and the Australian Open this year.”

The 29-year-old Czech player is a double Grand Slam finalist.

She lost to Australia’s No. 1 finish at Ash Barty in this year’s Wimbledon Championship and the 2016 US Open final for Angelique Kerber when Pliskova won Serena Williams in the semifinals.

Pliskova’s best finish in Melbourne Park was the semi-finals in 2019, where she lost to potential champion Naomi Osaka after winning the Williams quarterfinals.

The Australian Open will begin on January 17th.
