Chloe Fraser won the 15 & Under title at the Carmel Barrau Open Table Tennis Tournament in Florida, USA, last Friday.

Fraser was very impressive in the finals, with 13-year-old Trinidad and Tobago winning American Steven Elias in four games. In the quarterfinals, Fraser defeated Luis Mejia in three consecutive games 11-8, 11-8, 11-8.

Fraser played unbeaten in an open gender competition, with all four wins coming against the boys. He opened one campaign for his group, beating Mexican Oliver De La Torre 11-2, 9-11, 11-6, 11-7. Fraser then beat Chrisnomar Aviles Perez in 6th, 6th and 8th to secure the group’s top spot.

Fraser and his teammate Solo Crusaders N’Kosi Rouse competed in Under 2100, Under 2200 and Under 2300 points. On Saturday, Rouse and Fraser advanced to the playoffs below 2200.

Rouse finished second in his group, a 20-year-old T&T player stopping Elias and Jimmy Shen. His only defeat was in the hands of David Helmick. Fraser defeated Steve Federico and Carmel Barrau, the man in whose honor the tournament was held. Fraser lost to Eriel Marimon, but finished second in the group and advanced to the playoffs.

Rouse and Fraser fell in the opening round of the playoffs. Rouse, who has 2,072 rating points, was played with Van Lyn (2,089). Rouse led the game 2-1, but Ly fought back to win the fierce duel of 9-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-5, 11-4.

Rouse also competed in Under 2400, Under 2550 and Open Singles. Although the former country junior player did not advance to the playoffs, he was not intimidated by the task of accepting players with much more points.

In Saturday’s open duel, Rouse was drawn to Group One. In his opening race, he faced top-ranked Jishan Liang. Liang, with 2,711 rating points, won 11-4, 11-4, 11-7. Rouse then lost reading 5, 6, and 5 to Kit Jeerapaet (2,209).

On Sunday, Rouse and Fraser joined the Under 4300 team event. Rousen’s 2,072 and Fraser’s 2,012 points gave the Crusaders a combined grade of 4,084.

Rouse and Fraser opened their team campaign with a 3-0 win. In the singles, they both won 3-0, but were forced to work harder in the doubles, eventually winning 15-13 in the fifth and decisive game. Even though they lost their next team match 3-0, the Rouse / Fraser combination finished second in the group and advanced to the playoffs. The Crusaders then crashed in the first round of the playoffs, and Rouse took a consolation win in his 3-1 loss.
