Rafael Nadal will return to the race in Abu Dhabi on Friday, and his expectations are low after a long absence from injury, but hopes to be high on next month’s Australian Open.

“I really hope my foot gets better and better to be back the way and at the level I want to be.”

Nadal explained it has been a “tough season” for him, but injuries and long breaks from the race are no strangers to him, and he claims he still has a fire to achieve more in the sport.

With the 2022 Australian Open just over four weeks away, Nadal wants to test his feet in Abu Dhabi and strive to make the Down Under journey in healthy conditions.

“You never know honestly,” he says when asked about his expectations for Melbourne.

“In sports, my experience says things are changing very fast. What seems impossible or almost impossible today, no one knows what can happen in one month.

Nadal has been training hard at home in Mallorca and has added to his coaching team in the form of his good friend Marc Lopez, who won the 2016 Olympic gold with him in a doubles match in Rio.

“I’ve done a great job at home, practiced with the right attitude, intensity, worked a lot in front of my fitness, so if I can do all this because my foot allows, I never know what’s going on,” said the 35-year-old.

– I know it’s going to be very difficult for me.

– If things go well, I only play one tournament before Australia and these two matches here, so there are not many hours spent on the field at the competition level before a tough and demanding tournament like Australia.

“But the main thing is still the same, to be healthy. If I’m healthy, I still have an inner fire to keep going and fight for my goals.”
