DURHAM – Freshman Trevor Keels scored a game record of 19 points during his classmate Paolo Banchero and junior Wendell Moore Jr.12, when 2. Duke ended his out-of-conference schedule by beating Elon 87-56 at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Saturday.
Thirteen players recorded at least a point for the Blue Devils (10-1), who placed 49.2 percent off the field, collecting their third win in five days. Duke forced Elon (3-9) to make 23 substitutions, but allowed Phoenix only 22 field goals.
Duke fired 21-7 into the lead in less than seven minutes in the first half, with Keels starting from the floor 3-3 and getting six starting points. The freshman finished the halftime with 15 points with a 7/10 shot, helping the Blue Devils take a 44-26 lead on the break.
Duke’s 11-0 run early in the second half made it a 29-point lead, and with the game firmly in hand, the Blue Devils never let it fall below 20. Banchero dropped nine rebounds in the afternoon, while Moore split the record with five assists without wins. Second year student Jeremy Roach won 4/7, including 3/4 in the three-point range, 11 points, three boards and three assists.
AJ Griffin added five points, five rebounds and two assists in 20 minutes. Jerald Gillens-Butler led Elon with 14 points, while Zac Ervin had 11 points and a team record of six boards.
Duke will open an ACC game against Virginia Tech on Wednesday, December 22nd in Cameron. Game tips at 9pm on ESPN2.
