The wheelchair tennis tournament arrives in Albemarle County

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) – Boar’s Head is hosting its first wheelchair tennis tournament this weekend.

The Piedmont Regional Tennis Association welcomed wheelchair tennis players of all ages around the area. Nine-time Grand Slam champion David Wagner also performed. He says wheelchair change changed his life. He always came from San Diego, California for this race in Albemarle County.

Wagner has participated in several Paralympics and now he is working to help others practice, to spread the importance of the sport.

He says basically all the rules are the same as the rules for able-bodied tennis, except that those in wheelchairs can get an extra bounce. He says maintaining the same rules has allowed him to play this sport with all his friends, regardless of their abilities.

“This is what we want from wheelchair tennis in the United States, and USTA really supports everything about wheelchair tennis,” Wagner said. “It’s great to see all these guys and girls here competing and enjoying it and just learning.”

There is still a chance to get a part of the tournament. The last day is Sunday at Boar’s Head Sports Club.
