But it was because of four bad days, and I thought England was victorious in all aspects of the game. I thought they made a bad choice, I thought their strategy with the ball was bad, they clearly didn’t get enough runs on a good Adelaide field; Australia really beat them a lot, and Australia was without its two main bowlers, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood.

What happened this afternoon should not disguise it, although it was great to see that fighting spirit.

When you looked at that team’s range on this surface, four new ball bowlers, five right-handed seamstresses, all in a narrow pace, leaving your man at extreme speed – resting on him, they said he was perfectly fine, resting for what? They are a 2-0 loss – and a spinner.

It just didn’t make sense. I didn’t see any situation where the choice would make sense in this game, and I find that quite worrying because the choice has to be talked about before the game, of course, and there’s no cricket on the field against common sense. .

I think it went wrong again before the ball fell. I can’t survive how Brisbane’s green top wins the punch and plays a balanced attack with a spinner – and leaves Broad and Anderson out – and then gets to the level, dry hot in Adelaide, without a cloud cover throughout the test match, and plays five seams and leaves the spinner out.

So again, as in the first test match, before the ball drops, they make bad decisions off the field. Then the catches (dropped) again, the punches not the ball again, the bowlers just a little bit again – even their stock ball was less than half a meter from where it should be in Adelaide, a similar mistake they made four years ago.

With all of this, the end result is a hit. On a good field in Adelaide, they scored 230 in the first set and 190 in the second, so the stroke – with the exception of Sweden – remains a serious concern for English cricket.

It’s way too dependent on Joe Root and has been for the last two years, in fact even longer, because we talked that way when we said they were addicted to Cook and then Root. So it’s been a long, long time since we were able to book players who arrive and get runs.
