As director of the Australian Open, Tiley admitted on Wednesday that a small number of players and staff would be admitted to Melbourne Park without vaccination after receiving medical exemptions.
But at this point, no player had informed the Open staff that they had been granted an exemption.
“So if any player, fan (or) employee is present – you’re either vaccinated or you have a medical exception that is approved and you’re on the Australian Vaccination Registry.
“It provides us with security and added comfort on site.”
Tiley said he talked to Djokovic over the weekend, revealing that Serb wants to play – but the tennis boss still doesn’t know about his vaccination status.
“If Novak shows up at the Australian Open, he’ll either be vaccinated or get a medical exemption,” Tiley said.
“(It is) his choice of his medical condition, it is his choice to remain personal and private, as we would all do with any illness we may or may not have.
“We’re not going to force him or ask him to reveal it.”
Tennis Australia also issued a statement on the matter a few weeks ago, stating that medical exemptions should follow “strict government guidelines”.
“All Australian Open players, participants and staff must be vaccinated,” the statement reads. “All applications for a medical waiver must follow strict government guidelines based on ATAGI ‘s clinical advice.
“This is the same process that applies to anyone who wants to come to Australia.
“All the suggestions that Tennis Australia is looking for‘ loopholes ’in this process are simply not true.
“Deciding on medical exemptions is the domain of independent medical experts.
“We can’t influence this process, and neither should we.
“The safety of all is always our priority when planning the Australian Open 2022 and all opening events.”
Tsitsipas has been in trouble with Covid statements in the past when the Greek government reminded the 23-year-old that he is not a scientist when he said, “I personally know some people who have had them. I don’t mind it, I just don’t see any reason why anyone my age group needs vaccination. “
Prior to the Australian Open, world number one Novak Djokovic has refused to disclose his vaccination status, and uncertainty about whether he will be present in Melbourne is growing.
Tsitsipas posted a mysterious tweet on social media that apparently added a voice to the controversy.
“Everyone has their opinions on things they know nothing about,” the world’s fourth wrote.
